IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The picture illustrates a layout of a college cafe before and after redesigning. The former images illustrates basic cafe having lack of several features. There is a limited space for serving all sorts of foods which can result in long waiting times for customers, hence affecting customer feedbacks. The redesigning addresses several issues. It sections the serving and take-away areas. Coffee bar is placed right next to the take-away section so the place can be less chaotic and messy. The salad bar is aligned on left separately so people can comfortably walk with there hot served meals or even before that to grab a salad. The new layout also offers a comfortable outside seating space which also has an entry to the toilets, so the people sitting outside can have easy access to the restroom. The only issue is the placement of barbecue section as smoke fumes and smell can be quite uncomfortable for outdoor customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several genuine changes, including the new take-away and coffee sections, salad bar, outdoor seating and barbecue, and you compare the old and new serving arrangements. However, the response focuses heavily on imagined customer effects and opinions rather than describing the plans. For example, claims about long waiting times, reduced chaos, easy toilet access from outside, and uncomfortable barbecue fumes are not established by the diagram; in particular, the outdoor area is not shown as having direct toilet access. Important factual changes are also omitted, such as the former staff dining rooms being replaced and the bin becoming recycling bins. A clearer overview of the main spatial changes, followed by accurate details, would make the summary more complete and better grounded in the visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a generally understandable sequence: it introduces the redesign, describes several new facilities, and ends with a comment on the barbecue. Linking expressions such as “hence,” “so,” and “also” help connect ideas. However, the information is presented as one continuous paragraph, and the progression is not consistently organised around the plans—for instance, it moves from serving arrangements to customer behaviour, then to the salad bar and outdoor area. Some links express unsupported cause-and-effect rather than clear comparisons. Grouping the changes into an overview and then indoor and outdoor features, while using straightforward location-based transitions, would make the progression clearer and cohesion less dependent on repeated “so” constructions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary, including relevant terms such as “take-away,” “coffee bar,” “salad bar,” “outdoor seating,” and “placement.” These help communicate the main facilities, and the meaning is generally clear. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for a neutral plan description: “former images” does not clearly refer to the earlier plan, “customer feedbacks” is an awkward expression, and “hot served meals” is not a natural collocation. The response also relies on evaluative language such as “chaotic and messy” and “uncomfortable,” which is not supported by the plans. Use precise spatial and change vocabulary—such as “was replaced by,” “was added,” and “along the southern wall”—to describe what is shown rather than speculate about its effects.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including longer sentences with clauses introduced by “which,” “so,” and “as,” and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are present, however. In “The former images illustrates,” the subject and verb do not agree, and “a layout … before and after redesigning” uses an unclear grammatical construction. The phrase “with there hot served meals” contains an incorrect pronoun, while “Coffee bar is placed” and “the take-away section” would benefit from more consistent article use. The sentence beginning “The only issue is the placement…” is structurally clear, but the response would be more accurate overall with careful checking of agreement, articles, pronouns, and sentence boundaries.
