Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map illustrates how a college cafe looks before and after it's redesign. Some new facilities are added in the new design. The new facilites have significantly improved the overall experience for it's customers.

Overall, some new seating area is made outdoors. Along with that, Barbeque being one of the special attractions of the cafe. A new salad bar was added towards the west corner of the cafe near the kitchen.

The old design consisted of only one serving area for all food and drinks along the kitchen . The cafe had separate dining rooms for the college staff . However, in the present design the staff dining rooms have been converted to a coffee bar and a takeaway food counter. Meanwhile, no changes were observed in the design of toilets and the arrangements of indoor tables and chairs.

Earlier, there was only a single recycling bin near the toilet . Now, there are multiple recycling bins at the same place. Two additional entry and exit doors were added, the first one near the toilet and the other near the salad bar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You give a clear overview of the main redesign, noting the outdoor seating, barbecue and new salad bar, and you compare the former staff rooms with the new takeaway and coffee facilities. These points show a sound grasp of the plans. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the old plan shows a single bin, not a recycling bin, and the new plan labels recycling bins in that position. The two new doors lead from the café’s south wall to the outdoor seating; they are not described as one near the toilets and one near the salad bar. The hot-meals counter and the outdoor tables could also be reported. Your response covers the task, but some key changes are less fully and precisely presented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes. The comparison between the staff dining rooms and the new coffee and takeaway areas is placed logically, and phrases such as “However” and “Meanwhile” help signal contrasts. At times, though, the progression is less clear because several distinct changes are compressed into short statements, and the final sentence gives an inaccurate, confusing account of the new doors. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly “Along with that.” Grouping the changes by location or by what was retained versus added, and using clearer references to the two plans, would make the information easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “converted,” “outdoors,” “serving area” and “arrangements.” Some choices are imprecise or awkward for this task: “special attractions” is evaluative rather than a neutral description, “entry and exit doors” is less natural than “entrances,” and “near the west corner” does not clearly identify the salad bar’s position along the western wall. There are also spelling and form slips, including “facilites” and “Barbeque.” Aim for precise, neutral terms for facilities and locations, and check spelling carefully. More accurate use of labels from the plan would improve clarity and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “However, in the present design…” and the relative clause “which…”. Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “before and after it's redesign” needs a possessive form and a noun form, while “Barbeque being one…” is a sentence fragment. The opening also runs words together after the full stop, and “Overall, some” lacks a space. In “the arrangements of indoor tables and chairs,” the article and phrasing are not well controlled. Review apostrophes, sentence completeness and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
