The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The maps illustrate how a college cafe looked before renovation and after it.

Overall, it is evident that new cafe has been undergone through several changes, which make it more cheerful, and attractive. Staff dining rooms have been transformed into take away food and coffee bar whereas, kitchen and toilets are remained unchanged. Moreover, salaad bar, barbecue, and outdoor seating have been added.

Looking at the details, the new cafe has been expanded significantly by adding salad bar, barbecue, and outdoor seating area, which make it more lively. In addition, serving area for all food and drink has been transformed into hot meals, which contribute to more attraction. On the other hand, the next major transformation is seen in saff dining rooms, which are converted to take away food and coffee bar. Furthermore, recycling bins are added instead of bin. In contrast, kitchen, toilets, tables and chairs are remained at the same position as they were in the past.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main overall changes: the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee facilities, new salad and outdoor areas are introduced, and the kitchen and toilets remain in place. This gives the reader a clear summary of the redesign, and the details you report are generally grounded in the plans. However, the overview says the café has become “more cheerful, and attractive,” which is an unsupported judgement rather than a description of the layout. The claim that it “has been expanded significantly” is also too broad: the outdoor seating is added, but the central indoor area remains. To strengthen the response, describe the spatial changes more precisely, including the new southern doors and barbecue, and distinguish additions outside from changes within the café.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph of supporting details. The overview usefully groups the main changes, and phrases such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships between points. This is a coherent arrangement, but some linking is mechanical or not quite suited to the relationship being expressed. For example, “In contrast” introduces features that stayed the same, although this is more a continuation of the comparison than a contrast with the preceding point. The details also move between additions, conversions, and unchanged features without a consistent spatial order. Organising them from the north and west to the south and east would make the progression easier to follow and reduce reliance on repeated transition phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “renovation,” “transformed,” “converted,” and “recycling bins,” and the reader can understand the main changes. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “expanded significantly” and “more lively.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for a plan description: “more cheerful, and attractive” adds subjective evaluation, while “contribute to more attraction” is an awkward collocation. Spelling errors such as “salaad” and “saff” also reduce accuracy. Aim for neutral, precise terms that describe locations and functions, such as “added,” “replaced,” and “located,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “whereas,” “which,” and “as,” so the response shows some structural range. Meaning is generally clear, but several errors in verb forms, agreement, and articles weaken accuracy. For example, “has been undergone through” uses an incorrect passive construction; “kitchen and toilets are remained unchanged” should use a different verb pattern; and “the new cafe” needs an article or possessive determiner. In “tables and chairs are remained at the same position,” the verb form and singular “position” are also problematic. Practise describing changes with accurate patterns such as “has undergone changes,” “remain unchanged,” and “have been replaced by.” More reliable control of these common structures would improve the clarity of your complex sentences.
