The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate a college cafe layout before and after the established changes respectively.

Overall, it is evident that the major changes to the cafe layout were made by adding barbeques and open area seating.

Also,The cafe is modernized by adding takeaway food options for their visitors.

Looking into the comparative details of the previous and todays structure of the cafe, An additional outdoor area is seen in the updated plan along the southern wall of the cafe with the barbeque area to its left corner. Furthermore, to add variety to the food of an updated cafe, a salad bar is added right in the middle of barbeque and the kitchen.

For further changes, the staff dining room along the northren wall in the previous layout is replaced with the take away food and coffee bar. The table with chairs, bins and toilet are at their same place as the prior plan of cafe, in the center, south east corner and along the eastern wall respectively. Similarly no significant changes in kitchen location (north-west corner) has been done after reinovation. however, inside the kitchen, the serving area in the right corner of the kitchen is replace by hot meals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation clearly: the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue, and the replacement of the staff dining rooms with takeaway food and a coffee bar. You also accurately note that the kitchen, central tables and chairs, and toilets remain in place, and that the serving counter becomes a hot-meals counter. This covers the key before-and-after features and gives the response a clear overview. To make the account more complete and precise, mention that recycling bins replace the single bin, and describe the new southern doors and the four outdoor tables. The salad bar is on the western wall, not “in the middle” between the barbecue and kitchen. These omissions and the location error keep some details less fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph comparing specific features. The sequence from the outdoor changes to the northern rooms and retained facilities is generally understandable, and phrases such as “Furthermore” and “For further changes” help signal additions. However, some linking is mechanical, and the overview’s second sentence begins awkwardly with “Also,The”. Several details are crowded into one long final paragraph, making the comparisons harder to follow. Grouping the changes by area—north, west, centre/east, and south—and using clearer references such as “the former staff rooms” would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “layout,” “southern wall,” “north-west corner,” “replaced,” and “modernized,” so the main changes are communicated. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “takeaway food options” and “outdoor area.” However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise: “established changes” is not a natural way to describe the redesign, and “open area seating” is less exact than “outdoor seating.” Spelling errors such as “barbeques,” “northren,” and “reinovation” also reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent, precise terms from the plan, and avoid describing the salad bar as being between other features when it is along the western wall.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “which” clauses and comparisons between the two plans. Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the serving area … is replace by hot meals” needs a passive form with correct tense (“was replaced”), while “no significant changes in kitchen location … has been done” has agreement and sentence-structure problems. Articles and possessives are also inconsistent in phrases such as “an updated cafe” and “their same place.” Punctuation needs attention too: “Also,The” and the lower-case “however” after a full stop interrupt the flow. Check verb forms, agreement, and sentence boundaries when editing.
