The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bluprints shows a collage cafe before and after it was redesigned. Old cafe was simple and lacked lots of facilities. In contrast, contemprory cafe is more practical and provides better facilities. A significant change is noted in the outside area of the cafe.
Before redesigning, the cafe had two staff dining rooms. However, in todays cafe these rooms are turned into takeaway food and coffee bar. In addition, a salad bar has been added to the modren cafe. An other significant change has been made in contemprory cafe by providing outdoor seating. This steps leads to more setting area for visitors. Furthermore, a separate barbecue section has been added into the outside sitting area. Both plans demonstrates that the location of the toilets and bin remains the same, However, normal bins, are upgraded to recycling bins in the modren cafe. In addition, serving area of the old cafe have been redesigned for hot meals only.
To sum up, some major changes have been made into the modren cafe by adding verious bars. Thus, making it more practical and comfortable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main contrast between the former staff dining rooms and the new takeaway and coffee-bar areas, and you also report the added salad bar, outdoor seating and barbecue. The overview that the redesigned café offers more facilities is relevant, and your comparison of the bin with the recycling bins and the serving counter with the hot-meals counter is grounded in the plans. This gives the response clear coverage of the main changes. To make the account more fully developed, include other notable features, such as the kitchen and toilets remaining in place and the new southern doors connecting the café to the outdoor seating. Avoid unsupported evaluations such as calling the new layout “more practical and comfortable”; describe the visible changes instead.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable progression: an opening overview, a paragraph describing changes, and a concluding summary. Linking expressions such as “In contrast,” “In addition” and “Furthermore” help signal comparisons and additions, and the reader can follow the main points. However, several transitions feel mechanical because many sentences begin with a connector, while the paragraph groups changes without a clear spatial or before-and-after sequence. The final “To sum up” repeats the opening claim rather than adding a useful comparison. Organise the details more deliberately—for example, describe the north and west interior changes first, then the eastern and southern features—and use clear references when comparing the two plans. This would make the progression more controlled and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “staff dining rooms,” “takeaway food,” “salad bar,” “outdoor seating” and “recycling bins,” so the main changes are generally understandable. There is also an attempt to vary descriptions with phrases such as “significant change” and “separate barbecue section.” However, spelling errors are noticeable (“bluprints,” “contemprory,” “modren,” “verious”), and several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “collage cafe,” “more setting area,” and “added into the outside sitting area.” “Bars” is also too general for the specific facilities shown. Use accurate plan vocabulary and check spelling; prefer “college café,” “additional seating,” and “outdoor dining area.” Greater precision and more reliable collocations would strengthen the range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including contrast clauses with “However” and “In contrast,” and a relative clause in “This steps leads to more setting area.” Most of the intended comparisons remain understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction recur. For example, “The bluprints shows” has a plural subject with a singular verb, “Both plans demonstrates” has the same agreement problem, and “serving area … have been redesigned” does not agree with its singular subject. The final fragment, “Thus, making it more practical and comfortable,” is not a complete sentence. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and sentence completeness, and use consistent present or past forms when describing the plans. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentences clearer.
