The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illustrates how a college cafe has changed since the redesigning process.
Overall, The cafe has been expanded outdoors to serve more customers. The redesign has created separate area for different types of cuisine. Many more services were added into the cafe and they have prioritized the enviorment by adding Recycling bins.
They have added outdoor seating to host more students in the cafe. Also salar bar and barbecue areas were added suggesting extra variety in the menu. Serving area was changed to only serve hot meals whereas the cafe prioritized take away food for efficiency. A coffee bar is also added to serve coffee as it is faster to have a dedicated coffee section.
The cafe before the redesign used normal bins but now the recycling bins are much better for the enviorment. Also the staff dining rooms have been completely replaced fully prioritizing the students. Now the cafe is much bigger than it used to be due to the outdoor seating.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You provide a clear overview of the redesign, noting the new outdoor seating, added food and drink facilities, and replacement of the ordinary bin with recycling bins. These are relevant main changes, and the comparison between the former serving area and the hot-meals counter is grounded in the plans. However, some claims go beyond what the maps show: they do not establish that the cafe serves more customers, that take-away service is for efficiency, or that the cafe is “much bigger” overall. The plans show an outdoor seating area, but not a change in the building’s size. To strengthen the response, describe the physical layout more precisely—for example, the staff rooms becoming take-away and coffee sections, the salad bar on the west wall, and the new southern doors—rather than inferring reasons or effects.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing changes. This helps the reader identify the main comparison. However, progression within the body paragraphs is not consistently clear. The third paragraph moves from outdoor seating to the salad bar, then to hot meals and coffee, while the final paragraph repeats the recycling-bin and staff-room changes without developing a clear spatial or thematic sequence. Linking words such as “Also” are used repeatedly, and the sentences sometimes run together, as in “customers. The redesign” and “environment.Also”. Group details by location or by indoor and outdoor changes, and use clearer sentence boundaries and references to make the comparison easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing changes, including “redesign,” “outdoor seating,” “serving area,” and “recycling bins,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and some choices are imprecise or repetitive. “Cuisine” is not quite suitable for the facilities shown, which are food-service sections rather than different cuisines; “services” is also vague. Phrases such as “prioritized the environment” and “much better for the environment” express an evaluation rather than neutrally describing the plan. There are also spelling errors in “enviorment” and “salar.” Aim for precise map vocabulary and neutral descriptions, such as naming the new counters and locating them, rather than explaining presumed benefits.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt some complex sentence forms, including “whereas” to contrast the serving area with the hot-meals counter, and most ideas remain understandable. However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence boundaries, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “The redesign has created separate area” needs an article or plural form, while “A coffee bar is also added” does not maintain an appropriate tense for describing the current plan. Several sentences are joined without spaces after full stops, such as “customers. The” and “environment. Also,” which affects punctuation and readability. Practise using consistent present-tense descriptions of the plans, checking articles and plurals, and separating each complete sentence correctly.
