IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps illustrate the appearance of college cafe before the reconstruction of it now.
Overall, the area has become considerably more developed. The most noticeable changes are the construction of outdoor seating, while the kitchen in the northern part remains largely unchanged.
In the original layout, all beverages and food were served from single counter just adjacent to the kitchen in the top- left area. Today, this area is changed to serve hot meals. Similarly, two former staff dining rooms situated in the upper central section have been replaced by take away food and coffee bar counters. Additionally, two new food sections including salad bar and barbecue are built at the East corner of cafe.
To the south, an extension has been introduced consisting of outdoor seating area equipped with five large dining tables with chairs. Moreover, the single bin has been replaced by recycling bin situated at the right side of wall. By contrast, the main indoor tables and chairs area along with toilets stayed the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You give a clear overview of the main transformation, noting the new outdoor seating and the kitchen’s continued presence, and you compare several key features, including the former staff rooms becoming takeaway and coffee counters. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the barbecue is southwest of the building, not at the east corner, and the outdoor area has four tables rather than five. The salad bar is on the western wall, while the eastern side has the recycling bins. Your account also says the indoor tables and toilets stayed the same, but could more fully describe the new southern doors and the changes to the service areas. More precise location reporting and fuller coverage would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by details about the northern service areas and then the southern and eastern features. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” “Additionally,” and “By contrast” help guide the reader, and the comparisons are generally easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of clear organisation and shows some flexibility in connecting information. At times, however, the links do not accurately express the map relationships: “Additionally” introduces the salad bar and barbecue as though both are at the east corner. Grouping details by location more carefully, and using references such as “on the western wall” or “outside to the southwest,” would make progression more precise and cohesion less dependent on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned plan, including “reconstruction,” “replaced,” “extension,” and “remains largely unchanged.” These choices help communicate the main comparisons, and the meaning is generally clear. There are some imprecise word choices and collocations, however. “The appearance of college cafe” is awkward, “food sections” is vague for counters or facilities, and “built at the East corner” does not accurately describe the locations. “Single counter” also does not convey the original serving area as clearly as the map label. Aim for more precise plan vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “the café’s layout,” “food outlets,” and “located along the western wall.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence with “while” and the comparison beginning “By contrast.” Most sentences communicate their intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening needs an article and a clearer time construction: “the appearance of college cafe before the reconstruction of it now” is not well formed. In “were served from single counter,” an article is missing, and “this area is changed” should use a suitable past or present-perfect form to describe the redesign. There are also article and number issues in “outdoor seating area” and “recycling bin.” Review articles, tense consistency, and sentence phrasing while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
