The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given map depicts the structure of college cafe how it was looked and after redevelopment how it views after adding many new facilities.
Overall, it is readily apparent that cafe is completely modernize after redesign, also it is expanded and use that for more outdoor seating. Moreover, many new facilities are added. Such as, coffe bar, seperate take away food section, salad bar, barbecue.
Before refurbishment, cafe space was limited in one area, all the facilites in one place. Also, kitchen and serving area for all food and drink was combined. Then, tables and chairs was situated in the center part of cafe. While, staff dining room was seperated from customer eating area. In addition, dustbin was put in a west direction, and refreshment room was in the south-west corner.
On the other side, after the redevelopment of cafe it is completely modern, with so many facilites are involved in the cafe, which is more attractive. Also, cafe area is expading and use that space for cutomers to seat outside of the cafe under the nature, with the huge number of tables and chair, so more coustomers can eat food at a time. Furthermore, barbecue also placed in western side of resturants. Then kitchen area is at the same location, serving area is converting into a hot meals, make a seperate salad bar space. Additionally, staff dining room is transfer into a take away food counter and coffe bar for easy to customers. Recyling bin and toilets remain at same place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main change clearly: the café has been modernised and now includes outdoor seating and several new food facilities. You also report a number of accurate comparisons, including the kitchen and toilets remaining in place, the staff dining rooms becoming a takeaway counter and coffee bar, and the serving area changing to hot meals. This covers the task well, though some details are unclear or inaccurate: the bin was on the eastern wall, not the west, and the toilets were in the south-east corner, not the south-west. The overview also says the café has expanded, but the key change is the addition of seating outside. To strengthen the response, describe the new southern access and outdoor tables more precisely and avoid unsupported claims such as the redesign making the café more attractive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph about the original plan and one about the current layout. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the comparison. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes weakened by mechanical or awkward linking, such as “On the other side” and repeated use of “Also,” “Then,” and “Furthermore.” Some references are unclear—for example, “use that space” does not specify the outdoor area—and the final paragraph combines several changes in a long sequence. Grouping information by location or by what changed and what stayed the same, and using more precise transitions, would make the comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant vocabulary for describing plans, including “redevelopment,” “serving area,” “outdoor seating,” and “remain at same place,” so the reader can identify many of the changes. However, the range and control are limited by repeated general terms such as “facilities” and “area,” as well as inaccurate or unnatural collocations: “cafe space was limited in one area,” “under the nature,” and “barbecue also placed.” Spelling errors such as “coffe,” “seperated,” “coustomers,” and “recyling” are noticeable and reduce precision. Aim to use specific layout terms and check spelling carefully; for example, distinguish a counter, seating area, and entrance rather than describing them all as facilities or space.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, control is inconsistent, especially in longer constructions. Examples include “how it was looked,” “tables and chairs was situated,” and “cafe area is expading and use that space,” where verb forms, agreement, or sentence structure are faulty. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention: “cafe is completely modernize” and “Such as, coffe bar…” are not well formed. These errors sometimes make the reader work to understand the intended relationship between ideas. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions of the former plan and present-tense descriptions of the current one, while building longer sentences from correctly controlled clauses.
