Student answer (Band 6.0)

The Map Illustrates the development of a college cafe and how it looks before and now.

Overall, the cafe has undergone substantial redevelopment from removing service area to staff dining rooms and introducing many things like outdoor seating, recycling bin and stalls.

Before the redesigning of cafe the kitchen is located in the north-western corner of the cafe and the service area for all food and drink is just opposite to the kitchen. Subsequently, the staff dining rooms are situated in the northern side of the cafe. In the center, there are some tables and chairs. Moreover, the bin is located in the eastern side and the toilets are in east-western corner of the cafe.

At present, the service area of all food and drink has been removed and replaced with hot meals stall . Whereas, the the staff dining rooms have been also replaced with take away food and coffee bar and the bin is replaced with recycling bin. Additionally, the barbecue corner and outdoor seating has been introduced at the outside of cafe. However, the kitchen and toilets are in the same position.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation clearly: the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee facilities, the serving area changes to hot meals, and outdoor seating with a barbecue is added. You also note that the kitchen and toilets remain in place, giving the report a relevant overview and covering both plans. Some details are less fully reported, however: the new salad bar and the two new southern doors are omitted, and the central tables and chairs are not explicitly described as remaining. The location of the toilets is also inaccurately given as the “east-western corner”; they are in the south-east corner. To strengthen the response, select these additional changes and describe the overall pattern of redevelopment more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a description of the former layout, and a paragraph on the current café. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and time markers such as “Before” and “At present” help distinguish the two plans. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, particularly the repeated use of “Moreover,” “Additionally,” and “However.” The final “However” does not express a clear contrast, since the kitchen and toilets remaining in place is another relevant comparison. The long final paragraph also groups several changes together without a consistent spatial order. Organising each plan from one side of the café to another, and using clearer contrast links, would make progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “redevelopment,” “located,” “replaced,” and “introduced,” and the main changes are generally understandable. There are, however, several imprecise or unnatural choices: “development” is less exact than “redesign,” “stalls” is not the best label for the new facilities, and “east-western corner” does not accurately express the toilets’ position. “Many things” is also vague for a formal map description. Some repetition of “replaced” and “cafe” limits flexibility. Aim for precise spatial and functional terms, such as “south-east corner,” “food counter,” and “facilities,” while avoiding informal generalisations. These improvements would make the description more exact and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Before” and “Whereas,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors are noticeable, though. In “the the staff dining rooms,” the article is duplicated; “the barbecue corner and outdoor seating has been introduced” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “Whereas” is used as a sentence fragment rather than joining a complete contrast. The phrase “before the redesigning of cafe” also has an awkward article and noun construction. Review agreement with compound subjects, article use, and punctuation around contrast clauses. More consistently accurate sentence patterns would help you express the comparisons without disrupting the reader.
