The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams depict the before and after restorarion layout of a collage cafe. Overall, the demand of cafe has increased and various addition have been made to the menu of the cafe. Outdoor seating accomodations and take away food section have been made to handle the surplus in demand.
The plan clearly shows that various food items have been added to the menu by creating a separate hot meals section inside the kitchen. A salad bar is also placed right beside the entrance of the kitchen. The staff dining rooms are replaced by take away food and a coffee bar.
The single bin section right beside the entrance has been switched with multiple recycling bins. The placement of the toilets remain unchanged just to the west of the entrance. Two doors have been added alongside to the toilets for entrance and exit of outdoor seating. Additionally, outdoor seating has multiple tables and chair and a barbecue section has also been added on the north end of the outdoor seating area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify several important changes, including the replacement of the staff dining rooms, the new food counters, recycling bins, and the outdoor seating and barbecue. The overview also recognises that the café has been expanded with new facilities. However, the claim that demand has increased and that additions were made to handle surplus demand is not shown by the plans. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the salad bar is on the western wall, not necessarily beside the kitchen entrance, and the outdoor doors are in the southern wall rather than alongside the toilets. The barbecue is to the south-west of the building, not at the north end of the outdoor seating. More precise comparisons and a clearer account of the unchanged central seating and toilets would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an opening overview is followed by paragraphs describing interior changes and the outdoor area. This makes the main points reasonably easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Additionally,” and “The plan clearly shows” help signal progression. However, the overview introduces an unsupported explanation about increased demand, and the final paragraph combines several changes without consistently guiding the reader through their locations. Some references are also unclear, particularly “Two doors have been added alongside to the toilets,” which makes the spatial relationship difficult to understand. Organising the details more systematically—for example, north and west interior changes first, then the eastern and southern features—would make the progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “replaced,” “section,” “recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating,” and the reader can generally understand the changes. However, several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision: “restorarion” and “accomodations” are misspelled, while “collage cafe” is not the appropriate phrase for a college café. “Demand” and “surplus in demand” introduce an interpretation that the plans do not support, and “menu” is less precise than describing new service areas or counters. Some expressions are also awkward, such as “single bin section” and “multiple tables and chair.” Aim for accurate plan-description vocabulary and check spelling, collocations, and plural forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the opening sentence with “Overall” and the passive construction “The staff dining rooms are replaced by…”. Most sentences communicate their main meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “various addition have been made,” the plural subject requires “additions,” and “The placement of the toilets remain unchanged” needs subject–verb agreement (“remains”). The phrase “Two doors have been added alongside to the toilets” has an incorrect preposition pattern, while “multiple tables and chair” needs a plural noun. Tense use is also inconsistent when describing completed redesign changes: “are replaced” would be clearer as “were replaced.” More accurate agreement and sentence patterns would improve control.
