IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustrations display how the cafe looked before and after the renovation.
Overall, there are significant structural and infrastructural changes to the cafe. Outdoor seating has been launched after the redesign and staff dining rooms have been removed.
Prior to the redesign, there was a serving area for all the foods and drinks along with a kitchen area. In addition, there were two seperate staff dining rooms and a wide area containing tables and chairs. In the right side of the cafe there used to be a bin and just beside it there were toilets.
The renovated cafe now has hot meals portion instead of the serving area. The staff dining rooms have been replaced by take away food and a coffee bar. Salad bar has also been introduced in the west part of the cafe. Recycling bins have been kept in place of bins. Moreover, numerous tables and chairs have been placed for the outdoor seating and a barbecue area is also constructed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response identifies the main transformation clearly: the staff dining rooms are removed, new food-service facilities appear, and outdoor seating with a barbecue is added. It also accurately notes the kitchen, central tables and chairs, toilets, and the change from a general serving area to hot meals. This gives a relevant overview and covers both plans. Some details are less fully reported, however: the two new southern doors and the four outdoor tables are not mentioned, and the position of the recycling bins is described only generally. The phrase “numerous tables and chairs” is also less precise than the plan’s four tables. More exact spatial comparisons and fuller coverage of the outdoor changes would make the summary more complete and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The four-paragraph structure is appropriate: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the original and redesigned café. The sequence from the earlier layout to the current one is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Prior to the redesign,” “In addition,” and “Moreover” help connect information. However, some connections are mechanical, and the description sometimes reads as a list rather than a comparison. For example, the final paragraph moves from the hot-meal counter to the salad bar and then outdoors without clearly grouping the internal and external changes. The reference in “beside it” is also not fully clear. Grouping related features and using more precise location references would improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response uses a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “renovation,” “replaced,” “introduced,” and “outdoor seating.” These choices communicate the main changes, and the writer attempts some less common wording. There are, however, several inaccurate or awkward collocations: “hot meals portion” is not a natural label for the counter, “launched” is an unsuitable choice for seating, and “constructed” is less appropriate for describing a facility added to a café plan. “Numerous” is also vague where the plan shows a specific arrangement. The spelling “seperate” is incorrect. Using the plan’s labels more directly and choosing precise verbs such as “added” or “provided” would make the vocabulary more natural and accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. The past-tense framing in “Prior to the redesign, there was…” and the present-perfect passive in “have been replaced” show some range. Some grammatical errors remain, including the missing article in “Salad bar has also been introduced” and the awkward construction “The renovated cafe now has hot meals portion.” The sentence “In the right side of the cafe there used to be a bin and just beside it there were toilets” also has an unclear reference and would benefit from more controlled sentence structure. Check articles and noun phrases, and use consistent, precise constructions when describing locations and changes.
