Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given illustrations are the comparison between past and present design of a Cafe.

Overall, Cafe depicts a most significant changes in the design including addition of the outdoor seatings. Moreover, Barbeque and Salad bar are added offering more services to customers.

Before redesign, kitchen was located in north-west of the deign, beside which there was serving area for all varities of food and drinks. In the middle section, the large area was covered by tables and chairs. In addition, there were staff dining rooms just above dining area. Toilets were designed in the south-east corner of the plan, and just above that small space was allocated for Bin.

In the present day, no changes has been made to the kitchen, middle seating, and toilet areas. Serving area have been replaced by hot meals and staff dining rooms are re-purposed for take-away and coffee bar partitions. The space for the recycling is upgraded and numerous bins are added. Addition of the outdoor seating area consisting of 5 tables is the most noticable change in the design. Furthermore, salad bar section and barbeque sections are added; former in inside and latter in outside the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You give a clear overview of the main redesign, noting the outdoor seating and the addition of a barbecue and salad bar, and you compare several features before and after. Most locations are reported accurately, including the kitchen, central seating and toilets. However, some details are imprecise or incorrect: the outdoor area has four tables, not five, and the recycling bins replace the single bin rather than representing an upgrade with “numerous bins.” The overview could also identify the conversion of the staff dining rooms into takeaway and coffee-bar areas as a major change. Your report covers the task, but some selected features are less fully and precisely described than others; accurate detail and a more complete overview would strengthen it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the former layout and then the current one. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “In addition,” “In the present day,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between points. Some connections are less clear or slightly mechanical, however. For example, “The space for the recycling is upgraded” does not clearly explain how the new bins relate to the former bin, while “former in inside and latter in outside” makes the final comparison awkward to process. Use more precise referencing and connect related changes directly—for instance, group the former staff rooms and their new uses together. This would make the progression smoother and more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “north-west,” “re-purposed,” “partitions,” and “consisting of.” These choices help convey locations and changes, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “Cafe depicts a most significant changes,” “outdoor seatings,” and “space for the recycling is upgraded.” There are also spelling errors in “varities” and “noticable,” and inconsistent capitalisation of common nouns such as “Cafe” and “Barbeque.” Aim for precise, natural phrases used in map descriptions, and check spelling and word forms. This would make your adequate range more accurate and allow the less common vocabulary to sound more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast between the former and current layouts. The main information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Cafe depicts a most significant changes” has problems with the article and singular/plural agreement; “no changes has been made” should use a plural verb; and “Serving area have been replaced” also has subject–verb disagreement. Articles are missing in phrases such as “in north-west” and “in outside the cafe,” while “former in inside and latter in outside” has an incomplete grammatical structure. Review agreement, articles and sentence construction, especially when using compressed comparisons. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
