The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps provided illustrates the changes made in a college cafe after its redesign. The cafe has undergone several changes and now, the cafe can serve to more students and staffs after the addition of outdoor seating facilities as well. The variety of food items have also increased and now served in separate sections.
Food which was before served only in the main serving area is now divided into sections based on types. The main serving area now is replaced with Hot meals section. And to south of kitchen's door, a salad bar is opened. The two staff dining rooms are now converted into take away and coffee bar centres. The bin is upgraded to a bigger Recycling bin. The indoor tables and chairs area has now changes. But the main highlight of this redesign work is the addition of Barbeque section and outdoor seating facility, this is constructed to the south of the older indoor seating area. There are 2 doors (entry & exit). The Barbeque section is opened near the entry door which is along the side of Salad bar area, while the exit is near the Toilets. There are now changes in Kitchen and Toilets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main purpose of the redesign and give a useful overview of the expanded food options and the new outdoor seating and barbecue. Several key changes are accurately reported, including the conversion of the staff dining rooms into takeaway and coffee areas, the addition of a salad bar, and the replacement of the serving counter with a hot-meals section. This covers the task well, though some details are unclear or inaccurate: the recycling bins are not described as bigger, and the statement that the indoor tables and chairs area “has now changes” does not explain what changed. The final claim that the kitchen and toilets changed is unsupported; both remain in their original locations. More precise comparisons and a clearer account of the southern access would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable progression: it introduces the redesign, describes changes to food service and indoor facilities, then highlights the outdoor area. This gives the reader a general sense of the transformation. However, the information is presented in one continuous block rather than clearly organised paragraphs, and some links between details are difficult to follow. For example, the description of the two southern doors, barbecue and toilets is confusing, particularly the claim that one door is an “exit” near the toilets. The repeated use of “now” and “The” to begin sentences also makes the linking feel mechanical. Grouping the overview separately and then describing indoor and outdoor changes in distinct paragraphs would make the progression clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “redesign,” “separate sections,” “outdoor seating,” and “recycling bin,” so the main changes are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific terms such as “converted” and “addition.” However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise: “serve to more students and staffs” is unnatural, “centres” is not the clearest label for the food-service areas, and “upgraded to a bigger Recycling bin” adds an unsupported size claim. “Barbeque” is also inconsistently spelled, and “facility” is repeated where a more precise description would help. Aim to use the plan’s labels accurately and choose natural collocations when describing changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including “Food which was before served…” and the sentence beginning “while the exit is near the Toilets.” Most of the intended meaning can be understood, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “The maps provided illustrates,” and “The variety of food items have” also has a singular/plural mismatch. There are problems with articles and sentence construction in “to south of kitchen’s door,” while “The indoor tables and chairs area has now changes” has an incorrect verb form. The final sentence, “There are now changes in Kitchen and Toilets,” is also awkwardly formed. Check agreement, verb forms and articles, and use complete, clearly structured sentences.
