The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams illustrate the layout a college cafe before and after its redevelopment.

Overall, many changes and relocations are made in its design over the time.

The first plan presents the old layout of a college cafe. The entrance into the building was located on right side. The kitchen area was present on left corner of the building with a serving counter for all food and beverages. The cafe had two dinning rooms for staff members. The toilets were loacted on right corner of the cafe. The tables and chairs for students were in the big hall. There was a bin along the right sided wall of the cafe.

The second diagram shows the plan of college cafe after it has been redisigned. The location of exit and entry door, kitchen, area, toilets and bin remined the same. However, bin is converted to a recycle bin. The kitchen counter is used to serve hot meals now. Staff rooms are replaced by take away food and coffee bar. The table and chairs in the main hall are same as before. Moreover, there is a considerable development with seating. Furthermore, an outdoor barbecutte is also added to the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main purpose of the plans and give a useful overview that the café was redesigned, noting the new food counters and outdoor seating. Several key comparisons are accurately reported: the kitchen and toilets remain in place, the staff rooms become takeaway and coffee areas, and the serving counter now provides hot meals. However, some important changes are only briefly or vaguely covered. “A considerable development with seating” does not explain that two doors were added to the south wall and that four tables are provided outside; the salad bar on the western wall is also omitted. The statement that the “location of … bin” remained the same is imprecise, since it became recycling bins. More precise coverage of these features would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two plans, so the reader can follow the before-and-after comparison. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Moreover” help signal the progression, and the main changes are generally grouped sensibly. This clear structure meets the lower-band expectations and shows some features of stronger organisation. To improve further, make the overview more informative and connect related changes rather than listing them in short, separate statements. For example, the new outdoor seating and barbecue could be explained together, while the unchanged features could be contrasted with the redesigned service areas. The repeated “The first plan…” and “The second diagram…” framing is also somewhat mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “layout,” “serving counter,” “main hall,” and “replaced,” and the meaning is usually clear. There is some attempt at more specific language, such as “considerable development,” but this phrase is vague in this context and does not identify the actual addition. Several spelling errors are noticeable, including “dinning,” “loacted,” “redisigned,” “remined,” and “barbecutte.” Some word choices are also imprecise: “recycle bin” would be better expressed as “recycling bins,” and “exit and entry door” is less natural than “entrance/exit doors.” Build accuracy in spelling and use precise plan-related terms to describe locations and facilities.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and some more complex forms, including “The kitchen area was present … with a serving counter” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences communicate the intended changes, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles and prepositions are missing or awkward in phrases such as “on right side” and “on left corner”; write “on the right side” and “in the left corner.” The sentence “The location of exit and entry door, kitchen, area, toilets and bin remined the same” has problems with articles, number agreement, and punctuation, and its meaning is less clear. Tense control also needs attention: use consistent past forms for the earlier plan and present forms for the current one. More accurate sentence construction would strengthen the range you already attempt.
