The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The layout outlines a college cafe before it was redesigned and it's current look.
Overall, despite some features remaining the same, some areas have been transformed and new stations put up with significant changes made in the main area and creation of an outdoor area.
In the first plan, the bin was placed to the east of the room, staff dining rooms to the north, and the serving area for all foods and drinks just next to the kitchen at the northwest side.
By present day, several areas are replaced. The serving area is now designated for hot meals, staff dining rooms made for take away food and a coffee bar as well as replacing the bin with recycling bins. Tables and chairs, kitchen and the toilets remain at the same spots with an addition of a salad bar to the west. An outdoor partio consisting of a barbecue and outdoor seating area is added to the layout.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main changes and provide a clear overview: some features remain, while new service areas and outdoor seating have been added. The comparisons are generally accurate, including the conversion of the serving area to hot meals, the replacement of staff dining rooms with takeaway and coffee facilities, and the change from a bin to recycling bins. You also correctly note that the kitchen, central seating and toilets remain in place. However, some important details are only broadly reported: the two new doors to the outdoor area, the four tables outside, and the barbecue’s position are not specified. The description is relevant and covers the plans, but more precise selection and development of these features would strengthen it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable progression from an overview to the original plan and then the current layout, so the reader can follow the basic comparison. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In the first plan,” and “By present day” help signal this sequence. However, the final paragraph packs many changes and unchanged features into one long sentence, making the relationships between them less clear. The overview also groups changes broadly rather than previewing the main spatial developments. Use separate, logically grouped paragraphs for the original layout and the redesign, and divide the current-plan details into manageable sentences. More precise referencing and transitions would make the organisation feel less list-like.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of layout vocabulary, including “designated,” “replaced,” “remain,” and “addition,” and the reader can understand the main transformations. There are also some imprecise or unnatural choices that limit flexibility and precision. “Stations put up” is not a natural way to describe new facilities, while “partio” appears to be a spelling error and “outdoor partio” is unclear. “Current look” is understandable but informal for this report, and “all foods and drinks” is less natural than “all food and drink.” Aim for accurate collocations and consistent formal wording, such as “facilities were added” and “outdoor seating area.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and more complex forms, including the overview clause beginning “despite some features remaining the same” and the sentence contrasting what changed with what remained. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions remain. In “staff dining rooms made for take away food,” the verb is missing; write “the staff dining rooms were replaced by takeaway food and a coffee bar.” The phrase “with an addition of a salad bar” would be more naturally formed as “with a salad bar added.” The final sentence also needs clearer sentence boundaries, and “consisting of a barbecue and outdoor seating area” requires a more precise grammatical relationship between the barbecue and the seating. Check verb forms and sentence structure when listing changes.
