Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given plan illustrates the design of institutes cafe before and after refurbishment.

Overall, before the redesign, only few amenities were there such as staff dining rooms, kitchen area, toilets, bin and tables and chairs. However, after the refubishment more facalities have been provided.

To start with, majority of changes have been considered to make the cafe more efficient and excessible for others while, only minor changes have done in the kitchen area. Tables and chairs covers most of the area of cafe in both of the design. New facalities were provided to the college cafe such as outdoor seating area, barbecue corner, coffee bar and salad bar. Staff dining room were developed into two sections, one is for take away food and another is as coffee bar. Meanwhile, left side of the desing of kitchen area, minor changes have been into consideration that serving area for all food and drinks was now changed into hot meals area. Moreover, toilet area was remained same as it was and apart from it, bin compartment has been developed into recycling bins area. Salad bar and barbecue sections were designed for the development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main contrast between the original café and its expanded facilities, and your overview notes that the kitchen and toilets largely remain while new amenities are introduced. Several details are accurately reported, including the conversion of the former staff dining rooms into takeaway and coffee-bar sections and the change from a general serving area to hot meals. This covers the task well, but some important features are missing or unclear: the new southern doors and outdoor seating with tables are not described, and the recycling bins are mentioned without clearly locating them on the eastern wall. The statement that the café became “more efficient” is an interpretation rather than a visible feature. More precise coverage of the layout would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overall summary, and a paragraph describing changes. The overview gives the reader a useful sense of the redesign, and connectors such as “However,” “Meanwhile,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships. However, the final paragraph moves between the new facilities, the staff rooms, the kitchen, and the toilets without a consistently clear spatial or comparative order. Some links are also mechanical or confusing, particularly “Meanwhile, left side of the desing of kitchen area” and “apart from it.” The closing sentence repeats the mention of the salad bar and barbecue rather than adding a new comparison. Grouping changes by location—north, west, east, and south—would make progression clearer and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “refurbishment,” “outdoor seating area,” “take away food,” and “recycling bins,” so the reader can understand the general changes. There is also some attempt to vary wording through terms such as “amenities” and “facilities.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “refubishment,” “facalities,” “excessible,” and “desing,” and these reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “institutes cafe” and “barbecue corner” do not describe the plan as naturally as “college café” and “barbecue area.” Repeated use of “area” and “provided” also limits flexibility. Aim for accurate spelling and use specific verbs such as “replaced,” “added,” and “remained unchanged” to describe the plan.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “However” and a relative clause in “the serving area … was now changed into hot meals area.” The main meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “only few amenities were there” needs an article and a more natural construction, while “Staff dining room were developed” has a number-agreement problem. In “only minor changes have done,” the verb form is incomplete; use a passive construction such as “only minor changes were made.” Articles and sentence structure also need attention in “toilet area was remained same as it was.” These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but more consistent control of agreement, articles, and passive forms would improve accuracy.
