Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several important changes, including the kitchen remaining in place, the serving counter becoming a hot-meals counter, the staff dining rooms being replaced by takeaway food and a coffee bar, and the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue. However, the response gives only a limited account of the plans and does not provide a clear overview of the main changes. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the bin is beside the entrance on the eastern wall, rather than “in the enterence,” and the new doors are on the southern wall, leading outside. The salad bar and recycling bins are also worth reporting. A more complete comparison of what stayed the same and what changed would address the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response follows a basic before-and-after order, so the reader can identify which features belong to the original café and which belong to the redesigned one. However, the ideas are presented as a sequence of short statements, with little paragraphing or clear grouping of related changes. The opening repeats “design” and does not establish a clear overview, while transitions such as “The today cafe” and “And also” do not connect the information smoothly. Group the unchanged features together, then describe the new facilities and outdoor area, using clear links such as “Meanwhile,” “In addition,” and “By contrast.” This would create a more consistent progression and reduce the list-like effect.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “kitchen,” “serving area,” “tables and chairs,” “take away food,” and “outdoor seating.” The range is nevertheless limited, and several word choices or forms make the description unclear or unnatural, such as “dustbin,” “barbecue pot,” “the new area are open,” and “the cafe is quite change.” Spelling errors, including “enterence,” “oppsite,” and “repace,” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of plan-description terms and use the labels shown in the diagram—for example, “recycling bins,” “barbecue area,” and “was replaced by.” This would make the comparisons clearer and more appropriate to IELTS Task 1.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to describe changes using past and present forms, but grammatical control is weak and errors occur throughout. Examples include “The kitchen are remain same,” “The staff dinning rooms are repace,” and “two new entrance are opened,” where verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction are faulty. The opening also contains a repeated phrase (“design of of cafe”), and several sentences are joined or punctuated awkwardly, as in “centre of the cafe. and the toilets.” Most sentences use a basic pattern, with little accurate variety. Practise clear comparison structures such as “The kitchen remained in the same position, while the serving area was replaced by a hot-meals counter,” checking tense, articles, and subject–verb agreement.
