The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given image illustrates the previous and current layout of a college cafe after makeover.
Overall, the kitchen and toilet remained unchanged. Whereas, barbecue and outdoor seating has been newly build.
To begin with, the cafe held kitchen and serving area for all food and drinks in the north-west part. In the center, there were tables and chairs along with 2 staff dining rooms. Moreover, the bin was placed in between of the cafe gates and the toilets, in western part. Currently, after the renovation, there is a barbecue and outdoor seating (with 5 tables) build in the southern part of the cafe. The staff dining rooms has been replaced by take away food and a coffee bar. Apart from it, the serving area is convert for placing hot meals. The bins have been upgraded to the recycled once by keeping the doors and toilet as it is. Lastly, a new salad bar has been added in the tables and chair's area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main purpose of the plans and give a useful overview, noting that the kitchen and toilets remain while outdoor seating and a barbecue are added. You also cover several key changes, including the replacement of the staff dining rooms with takeaway and coffee facilities, the hot-meals counter, and the new salad bar. Some details, however, are inaccurate or unclear: the outdoor area has four tables, not five, and the bin is on the eastern wall, not the western part. The salad bar is along the western wall rather than in the tables-and-chairs area. The response addresses the task, but more precise reporting and a clearer account of the layout changes would strengthen it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing the original and redesigned layouts. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Currently,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the comparison. However, the main paragraph moves between the old and new plans without consistently grouping related features, and some links are awkward or unclear. For example, “Moreover, the bin was placed in between of the cafe gates and the toilets, in western part” makes the location difficult to follow, while “Apart from it” does not connect the next change naturally. Organise the details by area or by what changed and what stayed the same, and use clearer references to improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a redesign, including “remained unchanged,” “replaced,” “upgraded,” and “added.” These choices help communicate the main transformations, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, however: “after makeover” is less natural than “following the redesign,” “newly build” should be “newly built,” and “recycled once” does not accurately describe recycling bins. “Cafe gates” is also an imprecise label for the entrance doors. Aim for precise plan vocabulary and check word forms and collocations; this would make the description more fluent and exact without requiring unnecessarily complex terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “Whereas, barbecue and outdoor seating has been newly build” and the passive construction “The staff dining rooms has been replaced.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction remain. For example, “barbecue and outdoor seating has” needs plural agreement, “has been newly build” uses the wrong participle, and “The staff dining rooms has” should take a plural verb. The opening “Whereas” is also left as a fragment, and “Apart from it” is not integrated smoothly. Review subject–verb agreement and passive forms, and connect contrast clauses to complete sentences.
