Student answer (Band 6.0)
The picture illustrates the comparison of cafe before and after redesigning.
Overall the cafe had undergone significant modernization and expanision. The most noticable changes are addition of specialized food and drink stations and addition of barbecue station in outdoor area.
The original kitchen area stayed the same. The serving area was converted to the several functional sections. In teh current layout, the area adjacent to kitchen serves the hot meals. The staff dining rooms were upgraded and redesigned for take away food counter and a coffee bar. The area for the tables and chairs remained in their original locations, facing the take away counter. However, a salad bar was added to the west of the seating area. The dedicated recycling bin were added which previously was only a single bin. Another barbecue station was added in the bottom left corner with outdoor seating, consisting of multiple sets of tables and chairs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall changes: the kitchen remains, the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee facilities, and new food options and outdoor seating are introduced. The overview also highlights the modernization, which gives the report a clear central message. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise: the outdoor area includes four tables and a barbecue, but the barbecue is described as “another” station, although none existed before. The toilets remain unchanged, and the entrance arrangement is not mentioned. The claim that the seating faces the takeaway counter is not established by the plan. The response is one word below the required minimum, and adding accurate details such as these would make the comparison more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence: an introduction, a summary of the main changes, and then details about the kitchen, counters, seating and outdoor area. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “In the current layout” help guide the reader. The progression is generally understandable, but the information is compressed into one long body paragraph, and some links between changes are not fully clear. For example, “The dedicated recycling bin were added” does not clearly explain that recycling bins replace the original single bin in the same position. Separate the overview from the detailed comparison, and group indoor changes together before describing the outdoor additions. This would make the organisation more deliberate and the relationships between features easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned space, including “modernization,” “functional sections,” “adjacent,” and “outdoor seating.” These choices communicate the main changes, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice problems, such as “expanision,” “noticable,” and “teh,” as well as the awkward phrase “converted to the several functional sections.” “Another barbecue station” is also inaccurate in context because the plan shows a barbecue newly added, not a second one. Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling; for example, “divided into several service areas” is more natural than “converted to the several functional sections.” More precise vocabulary would strengthen the description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. The opening needs an article and a clearer construction: “The picture illustrates a comparison of the café before and after its redesign.” In “The serving area was converted to the several functional sections,” the article and preposition pattern are inaccurate; use “converted into several functional sections.” There is also an agreement error in “The dedicated recycling bin were added,” and the sentence about the barbecue would be clearer with a more accurate subject and verb. Check articles, agreement, and sentence punctuation when revising.
