The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams provide information about the renovation done in a college cafe. Overall, it is apparent that there was single serving area for all types of foods and drinks and kitchen was on the top left side while after the renovation the outdoor seating and specific points were built for different food.
The college cafe was very simple the kitchen and serving area was on the top left side of cafe, while staff dining room was beside the serving area and in the middle there was seating area for the customers. Moreover, toilets were on the bottom right side of the cafe.
After the renovation the kitchen remained on the same place the serving area had specific for the hot meals while staff dining rooms converted into take away food and coffee bar room and salad bar point was on the left corner. In addition, outdoor seating and barbecue point added on the bottom left side of cafe. However, the big recycling bin had been added and entry points increased to four door.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation: the kitchen stays in place, the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee areas, and outdoor seating with a barbecue is added. The overview also contrasts the original general serving area with more specialised food facilities, so the response covers the central changes. Some details, however, are unclear or imprecise. The salad bar is described as being “on the left corner” rather than along the western wall, and “entry points increased to four door” is ambiguous: the plan shows two new southern doors in addition to the existing entrance, not four newly added doors. The recycling bins are mentioned, but the unchanged toilets and central seating could be compared more clearly. More precise descriptions of these features would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the original café and then its current layout. This makes the before-and-after comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “In addition” help signal relationships. However, the overview combines several details in one long sentence, and the final paragraph moves quickly between the kitchen, counters, outdoor area, bins, and entrances. Some connections are therefore mechanical or unclear, particularly “However,” which does not express a clear contrast before the recycling-bin detail. Grouping changes by location or by what was retained versus added, and using more precise references, would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of layout vocabulary, including “renovation,” “serving area,” “staff dining room,” “outdoor seating,” and “recycling bin.” These terms communicate the main features, and the contrast between a general serving area and specialised food points is relevant. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, though: “specific points were built for different food” is vague, “salad bar point” is not a natural label, and “barbecue point” is less appropriate than naming the barbecue area. “Big recycling bin” also adds a size description not shown in the plan. Aim for precise map language such as “facility,” “counter,” “area,” and “along the western wall,” while avoiding unsupported modifiers.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “while” and a sequence introduced by “After the renovation.” The main meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “there was single serving area” needs an article, and “the serving area had specific for the hot meals” lacks a clear grammatical structure. In “staff dining rooms converted,” a passive form such as “were converted” is needed; “entry points increased to four door” also has problems with the verb construction and plural form. Sentence boundaries and punctuation could be more controlled, especially in the long overview sentence. Check articles, passive verbs, and plural agreement when editing.
