The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The plans illustrates the changes made to a college cafe before and after its redesign.

Overall, the cafe has been modified with the several new modifications including a coffee bar, salad bar, take away section and outdoor seating. the kitchen and toilets have remained at their original location.

Prior to redesign, the cafe contained the kitchen and serving area for food and drinks in the upper-left corner. Moreover, tables and chairs located at the center of the building while the staff room accupied the area at upper side of the table and chairs. The bin was also near the toilets on the right- side.

After the renovation, the serving area was replaced by the hot meals counter. The staff room dining is divided into two parts one is takeaway food and the other one is coffee bar. Additionally the salad bar was installed along the left wall and recycling bins were placed near the toilet. Another, significant alternation, was the addition of outdoor sitting with the several tables and chairs. a barbecue area was also introduced in the bottom left-corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main changes, noting the new coffee bar, salad bar, takeaway section and outdoor seating, while correctly identifying that the kitchen and toilets remain in place. The body also compares the former serving counter with the hot-meals counter and describes the replacement of the staff dining rooms. These details address the task and are generally accurate. To make the account more fully developed, include a little more precise spatial information: for example, the outdoor area is reached through two new doors in the southern wall, and the barbecue is immediately southwest of the building. The phrase “staff room dining is divided into two parts” also blurs the change from staff rooms to two new service sections.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a description of the original plan and then the redesigned café. This progression makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Prior to redesign,” “After the renovation” and “Additionally” help signal shifts between features. Paragraphing is appropriate and the main points are grouped sensibly. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Another, significant alternation” is an awkward transition, and the final details about outdoor seating and the barbecue would be clearer if presented as one connected description of the southern exterior. Use linking devices flexibly, but avoid inserting them where a direct sentence would create a more natural flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “replaced,” “installed,” “remained” and “addition,” and the reader can understand the main changes. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “serving area” and “recycling bins.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “several new modifications” is redundant, “outdoor sitting” is less natural than “outdoor seating,” and “staff room dining” does not clearly name the former rooms or their replacements. Spelling errors such as “accupied” and “alternation” also reduce precision. Aim for concise, conventional map-description phrases and check spelling, especially for key features.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences communicate the comparisons clearly. However, errors in agreement, articles, sentence construction and punctuation remain noticeable. For example, “The plans illustrates” should use a plural verb, while “the cafe has been modified with the several new modifications” has an unnecessary article and an awkward grammatical structure. In “tables and chairs located at the center,” the main verb is missing; “the staff room dining is divided” also does not form a clear sentence. Capitalisation after full stops is inconsistent, as in “the kitchen” and “a barbecue.” Work on complete clauses, subject–verb agreement and article use, then proofread sentence openings and punctuation.
