Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify a few relevant changes, including the kitchen remaining in the north, the serving counter becoming a hot-meals area, and the addition of a salad bar and outdoor seating. However, the response addresses the plans only minimally: it does not give a clear overview of the main changes or compare the layouts in a systematic way. Several important features are omitted, such as the take-away food and coffee bar replacing the staff dining rooms, recycling bins replacing the bin, and the barbecue beside the outdoor seating. There are also inaccuracies: the toilets are in the south-east corner, not the west, and the plans do not show a larger café or a changed menu. The response is 17 words below the required minimum. Describe the key changes accurately and include a concise overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic chronological structure, moving from the old café to its present layout, and phrases such as “On the one hand” and “Today” signal this shift. However, the progression within each part is weak: features are listed without a clear spatial order, and the final sentence introduces several changes without explaining how they relate to one another. The opening repeats “about” and does not clearly introduce the comparison. Paragraphing into an introduction, an overview, and two detail sections would make the organisation easier to follow. Use linking language to compare specific locations—for example, explain what replaced the staff dining rooms and how the southern entrance connects to the new outdoor area—instead of relying on general transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “serving area,” “staff dining rooms,” “salad bar,” and “outdoor seating,” so the reader can recognise several features of the plans. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which can make the description unclear. For example, “Cafe is situated at huge place” does not convey a useful map feature, while “Barbecue system” and “different foods add in menu” are not natural descriptions of what the plans show. Repeated use of “situated” also limits variety. Build a more precise set of terms for describing changes and locations, such as “was replaced by,” “was added,” “along the western wall,” and “in the south-east corner.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences joined with “Moreover” and “and,” but control is weak and errors occur frequently. Subject–verb agreement is problematic in “The given diagram illustrate” and “two staff dining rooms is situated.” Tense and passive forms are also inaccurate in “foods are serve” and “newly design,” while missing or incorrect articles appear in phrases such as “at north corner.” Sentence boundaries and capitalisation are inconsistent, particularly where “in old Cafe” follows a full stop. These errors sometimes make relationships between features difficult to understand. Practise accurate present and past passive forms for describing plans, and check agreement, articles, and sentence punctuation before submitting.
