The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The image compares a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now with more development.
Overall, the northern region of the cafe had the most significant change whereas, the east side of the cafe had the least redesign. The southern part experienced a major change with better seating arrangements for the students. As for the western region, it also showed some redesign as compared to before.
In detail, the northern region had a kitchen along with a serving area for all food and drinks, additionally it also had designated rooms for the dining of the staff. In comparison to today, the kitchen remained the same but the serving area transformed into a place where hot meals were served. Furthermore, the staff dining rooms got resconstructed into a coffee bar and a place for take away food. The southern region of the cafe only had a toilet before and the toilet remained but a outdoor seating was also built for better seating arrangment. The bin in the eastern region was later developed into recycling bins. As for the empty space in the western part, a salad bar and a place for barbecue was built.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main before-and-after changes and provide an overview, noting that the north changed most and the east least. Several comparisons are accurate: the kitchen remains, the serving counter becomes a hot-meal area, staff rooms are replaced by takeaway and coffee facilities, and the bin becomes recycling bins. This meets the task well, with some features reported less fully than others. However, the overview’s claim that the east had the least redesign is not clearly supported, and the southern changes are incomplete: the toilets remain, but you omit the two new doors and the four-table outdoor seating area. The barbecue is southwest of the building, not simply in the western interior. More precise coverage of these details would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a detail paragraph comparing the regions. The sequence from north to south, east, and west helps the reader follow the plan, and phrases such as “In comparison to today” signal contrast. However, the regional organisation occasionally makes relationships unclear: the barbecue is grouped with the western interior, although it is outside to the southwest, and the southern description combines the toilets with outdoor seating without explaining the new southern exits. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated “As for” and “In comparison.” Grouping the changes by indoor facilities and new outdoor space, with clearer references to location, would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned space, including “transformed,” “designated rooms,” “recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating.” These choices generally communicate the changes clearly. However, some wording is imprecise or unnatural: “more development” is vague, “the dining of the staff” is an awkward phrase, and “better seating arrangements” adds an evaluation not shown by the plan. There are also spelling errors in “resconstructed” and “arrangment,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise plan-description language such as “was converted into,” “staff dining rooms,” and “additional seating.” This would make the account more natural and exact while retaining the adequate range already demonstrated.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including contrast clauses such as “the kitchen remained the same but…” and a relative clause in “a place where hot meals were served.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “whereas, the east side” has unnecessary punctuation after the linking word, and “a outdoor seating” has an incorrect article. The sentence beginning “The southern region…only had a toilet before” also creates an inaccurate grammatical relationship between the region and the toilet; “There was only a toilet in the southeast” would be clearer. Review articles, punctuation around connectors, and sentence construction. Greater accuracy across these structures would help the response move beyond its current level.
