The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans give information about how a college cafeteria looks before and after its redesigning.
Overall, after re-modelling new food, beverages and sitting sections have been added to the college cafeteria that were not present there before. Staff dining rooms that were present in the former design have been replaced by new sections of food and coffee, while a new seating and barbecue section has been added in the later design.
In the old model food and drink serving area was near the kitchen, while in the new design serving area is being replaced by hot meals area. The placements of tables and chairs, toilets and bins in the main hall are the same in both designs, however the bins are being upgraded and transformed into recycling bins and a new section of salad bar is also been added opposite to them
Also, an extended outdoor seating and an outdoor barbecue section are being added in the new design that were not present in the old one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation clearly: the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee sections, the serving counter changes to hot meals, and outdoor seating with a barbecue is introduced. Your overview also captures the broad shift towards more food and seating options. This meets the task well, with the main features selected and compared. Some details are less fully reported, however: the new salad bar and the two new doors to the outdoor area are mentioned only briefly or not at all, and the unchanged kitchen and toilets could be stated more precisely. The claim that the bins are in the main hall is not supported by the plan; they are positioned along the eastern wall. More precise coverage of these details would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes inside and outside the café. The progression from the former layout to the redesigned one is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “while,” and “Also” help connect the comparisons. However, the final two paragraphs are not clearly separated, and the long sentence beginning “The placements of tables and chairs…” combines several changes without clear punctuation. The reference in “opposite to them” is also unclear, since it is not immediately obvious what “them” refers to. Use shorter, more clearly grouped sentences and organise the interior changes separately from the outdoor additions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “replaced,” “added,” “former design,” and “outdoor seating.” These choices communicate the main changes, and some variation avoids excessive repetition. At times, however, word choice and collocation are imprecise: “after its redesigning” is less natural than “after it was redesigned,” while “new sections of food and coffee” does not clearly name the takeaway-food area and coffee bar. “Extended outdoor seating” may also suggest an enlargement rather than the addition of a new area. Aim for precise labels from the plan, such as “takeaway-food section,” “coffee bar,” and “outdoor dining area,” and use natural collocations when describing changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a useful contrast in “Staff dining rooms … have been replaced …, while a new seating and barbecue section has been added.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some errors in verb forms, articles, agreement, and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “the new design serving area is being replaced” uses an awkward tense for a completed redesign; “is also been added” should be “has also been added”; and “an extended outdoor seating” has an article and noun-form problem. The sentence beginning “The placements of tables…” also runs on, with a missing full stop before “Also.” Practise describing completed changes consistently in the past or present perfect, and check sentence boundaries and agreement.
