The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams give information about layout of a college cafe prior to redevelopment and how it is at present.
Overall, the cafe has undergone significant changes as it has become well-equipped and modern with the inclusion of amenities such as salad bar, barbecue and outdoor seating. However, the toilets remained unchanged.
To commence with, the earlier design of the cafe was more congusted with everything at the one place. There was only one serving area for all food and drink, which has been dedicated to hot meals only today. Furthermore, the staff dining rooms have been replaced by the take away food and coffee bar rooms. The salad bar is added at the corner, just opposite to the kitchen.
The most notable change happened with the installments of outdoor seating, which makes it more convenient for diners. A number of bin has also increased to manage waste. one specific area is also built for barbecue just outside

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation clearly: the former general serving counter now provides hot meals, the staff dining rooms have become takeaway and coffee areas, and new outdoor seating and a barbecue have been added. The overview also notes that the toilets remain unchanged. These are relevant, accurate features, and the response addresses the task. Some details are less fully reported, however: the salad bar is on the western wall rather than simply “at the corner,” and the new southern doors and the four outdoor tables are omitted. “A number of bin has also increased” is unclear and does not accurately describe the change: one bin was replaced by recycling bins. More precise coverage of these features would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing changes inside and outside the café. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “The most notable change” help signal the progression, and the reader can follow the main comparisons. However, the final paragraph ends abruptly at “just outside,” leaving the barbecue description incomplete. Some connections are also imprecise: “The salad bar is added” follows the staff-room changes without clearly distinguishing its location or relation to them, while “A number of bin has also increased” does not clearly connect to the plan. Complete each point and use clearer references to the old and new layouts to strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “redevelopment,” “amenities,” “serving area,” “outdoor seating,” and “diners.” These choices communicate the general changes, and some less common wording is attempted. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “congusted” appears to be a misspelling of “congested,” “installments” is not suitable for describing additions to a layout, and “a number of bin” is both an awkward phrase and unclear in meaning. “Well-equipped and modern” is also a broad evaluation rather than a precise description of the plan. Prefer exact spatial and functional terms, such as “along the western wall” and “recycling bins replaced the single bin,” to improve precision and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including the overview sentence with “as” and the relative clause “which makes it more convenient for diners.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “about layout” needs an article (“about the layout”), and “A number of bin has” has problems with both number agreement and the plural noun. The sentence beginning “The most notable change happened…” is not completed with a clear, grammatically finished description, and the final phrase “just outside” is left without its object or a complete sentence. Check articles, singular/plural agreement, and sentence completion, and proofread punctuation and spacing.
