Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main change as a redesign that adds food facilities and seating, and you accurately note that the kitchen and toilets remain in place. The overview also mentions several new features, including the salad bar and barbecue. This covers the task’s central comparison and shows some awareness of the plan’s key changes. However, several details are incomplete or imprecise: the staff dining rooms were along the north wall, not “in the middle,” and the outdoor seating is not described as being outside along the southern wall with four tables. The recycling bins are said to “remain the same,” although the plan shows them replacing the single bin. More precise location comparisons and fuller coverage of the layout would strengthen the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs about the café before and after the redesign. This makes the comparison easy to follow at a basic level, and phrases such as “Before the redesign” and “After the redesign” guide the reader. However, the progression within the paragraphs is mostly a list of features, with limited linking or comparison between corresponding areas. The overview repeats some details that are then listed again, while the final paragraph combines several changes without a clear spatial order. Use a more consistent route through the plan—for example, north, west, centre, then south—and connect changes explicitly, such as the former staff rooms becoming takeaway and coffee areas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a floor plan, including “kitchen,” “serving area,” “toilets,” “outdoor seating,” and “recycling bins.” The response also attempts more specific terms such as “redesigned” and “additional.” However, the range is somewhat repetitive, especially with repeated uses of “section,” “area,” and “cafe,” and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “additional seating facilities” and “for a better facility” are not natural in this context. “Staff dining area” also loses the plan’s distinction between two rooms. Aim for precise plan vocabulary such as “counter,” “room,” “located,” and “replaced by,” and vary how you describe the changes. These improvements would make the account more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use a few different sentence patterns, including an overview sentence and time contrasts introduced by “Before the redesign” and “After the redesign.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “The plans illustrates” should be “The plans illustrate,” while “the toilets are remain the same” should be “the toilets remain in the same place.” In “Some other facilities are also includes,” the verb form is incorrect; use “Some other facilities are also included.” There are also missing articles in phrases such as “at upper left corner.” Work on accurate present and passive forms, subject–verb agreement, and article use, while retaining the clear basic paragraph structure.
