The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The map illustrates the proposed changes to the college cafe.

Overall, the cafe was substantially redeveloped, with original places being replaced by modern facilities, particularly in the south of the college. However, the Kitchen and the Toilets remain unchanged in the new plan.

Looking first at the north of the college cafe, the serving area below the Kitchen was replaced with the Hot meals section. In addition, the outdoor seating and the Barbecue area were introduced in the south of the cafe. New entry and exit door are present in the new plan which give the access to the south of the college cafe.

Turning to the Tables and chairs area, the Staff dining rooms were transformed into the Take away food space and a Coffee bar. Moreover, the Salad bar was proposed in the south-west of the Tables and chairs space, whereas, the size of recycling bin has been also increased in the new design.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You provide a clear overview of the main redevelopment, noting that the kitchen and toilets remain and that new facilities have been added, especially outdoors. The comparisons between the former serving area and the hot-meals counter, and between the staff dining rooms and the takeaway and coffee-bar sections, are relevant and accurate. This gives the response a clear focus and addresses the key changes. Some details, however, are misreported or too general: the new doors lead to outdoor seating, rather than simply “the south of the college cafe,” and the recycling bins are not described as larger in the plan. You also omit the western-wall position of the salad bar and the replacement of the single bin with recycling bins. More precise coverage of these features would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence: an overview is followed by descriptions of the northern and southern changes, then the central area and former staff rooms. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking first,” and “Turning to” help signal this progression, and the main comparisons are generally easy to follow. However, the organisation is not fully consistent: the paragraph beginning “Looking first at the north” also introduces southern features, while the final paragraph combines the staff-room conversion, salad bar, and bins without a clear spatial order. “Whereas” is also used awkwardly to connect the salad bar and bin information. Grouping changes by location and using clearer links between them would make cohesion more flexible and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned plan, including “substantially redeveloped,” “transformed,” “introduced,” and “remain unchanged.” Labels such as “Hot meals,” “Take away food,” and “Coffee bar” are incorporated clearly, and the language is generally appropriate to an academic report. Some choices are imprecise or do not match the plan: “proposed” suggests a future plan, although the task shows the cafe today, and “the size of recycling bin has been increased” invents a change in size rather than describing the recycling bins’ location or replacement of the old bin. “New entry and exit door” is also an unclear description of the two doors. More exact wording for spatial relationships and completed changes would improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the overview sentence with “with” and the contrast in “However, the Kitchen and the Toilets remain unchanged.” Most sentences communicate their main meaning, and the response shows some control of past and present forms. There are, however, several grammatical slips. “New entry and exit door are present” has a number-agreement problem, and “which give the access” has an incorrect verb form and article. In “the size of recycling bin has been also increased,” the article and placement of “also” are awkward. The sentence beginning “whereas” is not well joined to the preceding idea. Check agreement, articles, and clause connections, while retaining the range of sentence forms you already attempt.
