The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The plans compare the before and after layout of a college cafe. The former depicts the layout before rennovation, while the latter illustrates the layout after the changes took place.

As it can be seen from the diagram, the cafe underwent significant changes over time including the addition of new ammenities like Salad bar, Barbecue and a space allocated to outdoor seating.

Earlier, the serving area was used to serve all kind of food and drinks but after rennovation it only serves hot meals. The two staff dining rooms that were located at the center of the cafe are now replaced by a coffee bar and a place to collect food. In contrast, the tables and chairs are currently placed at the same location even after the changes took place.

The unoccupied space at the left hand side of the cafe is now allocated to a salad bar. The area is further extended to feature a barbecue and a dedicated space for outdoor seating. Furthermore, there was a single bin located at the opposite side of current salad bar which is now replaced by a number of recycling bins.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear account of the main redesign, including the change from a general serving area to hot meals, the replacement of the staff dining rooms, the new salad bar, and the outdoor seating and barbecue. You also identify features that remained, such as the central tables and chairs and the toilets. These details address the task and are generally accurate. To make the report more complete and precise, include the new take-away section explicitly and mention that the entrance remains on the eastern side; the description of the outdoor area could also note its position beyond the southern wall. The overview identifies significant additions, though it could summarise the overall pattern of change more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, an overview of the redesign, and paragraphs describing changes to the interior and exterior. The sequence is easy to follow, and contrasts such as “before and after” and “In contrast” help connect old and new arrangements. References including “the latter” and “the area” are generally understandable. To strengthen progression further, group related changes more systematically—for example, describe the northern service areas together, then the western and southern additions, and finally unchanged facilities. “Furthermore” introduces the recycling-bin detail, but the relationship to the preceding outdoor changes is not especially strong; a clearer transition or a separate sentence focused on eastern-side changes would make the organisation more deliberate.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “layout,” “allocated,” “replaced,” “dedicated space,” and “underwent significant changes.” These choices help convey the redesign clearly, and the meaning remains easy to understand. However, some wording is imprecise or less natural for this task: “the area is further extended” suggests the building itself expanded, while the plan shows outdoor facilities added beyond the southern wall. “A place to collect food” is understandable but less precise than naming the take-away section. There are also spelling errors in “rennovation” and “ammenities.” More accurate plan vocabulary and careful spelling would add the flexibility and precision needed for a stronger performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “The two staff dining rooms … are now replaced by a coffee bar and a place to collect food.” The contrast between past and present is generally clear, and the response includes subordinate clauses and linking phrases. A few grammatical choices remain inaccurate or awkward. In “Earlier, the serving area was used … but after rennovation it only serves hot meals,” the time reference shifts from past to present; keep the comparison consistently framed as before versus now. “As it can be seen” is also an awkward passive construction; “As can be seen” is more natural. Overall, the sentence structures are varied and meaning is clear, with a few errors still to refine.
