The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two plans illustrate the changes done in the college cafe before and after redesign.

Overall, there are several changes in the part of redesign process by adding new facilities like barbecue and salad bar. While kitchen, tables & chairs remains unchanged.

Looking at the plan before modification, the cafe contains an entrance at the east side of the block. Followed by a two staff dining rooms, the kitchen area is combined with the serving area which is located at the north-west direction. At the entrance a small bin and toilets are placed. There are tables and chairs in the centre of the cafe,

In the present plan, the new outdoor seating was constructed with barbecue. The entrance at the east side of the block remains same and new entrances are built for outdoor seating. Two staff dinning are replaced by take away food and coffee bar respectively. In the kitchen area the serving aera was demolished and hot meals was constructed. Where the new salad bar was built at the west side of the cafe and on the opposite side the small bin was changed to large recycling bins.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation and provide a clear overview: new facilities, including the barbecue and salad bar, have been added, while the kitchen and central seating remain. You also report several relevant changes, such as the staff dining rooms becoming a takeaway area and coffee bar, and the bin being replaced by recycling bins. This covers the task well, though some details are incomplete or unclear. For example, the outdoor seating is not described as having four tables, and the toilets’ unchanged position is not mentioned. The description of the original kitchen and serving area as “combined” is also imprecise. To strengthen the response further, compare the plans more precisely and include the key southern outdoor area and the unchanged toilets.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the original and current plans. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information. Some linking is effective, as in “In the present plan,” and the contrast between the two staff rooms and the new facilities is easy to follow. However, progression within sentences is occasionally awkward: “Followed by a two staff dining rooms” does not clearly connect the features, and “At the entrance” makes the bin and toilets’ locations ambiguous. The final paragraph also packs several changes together without consistently guiding the reader around the plan. Use clearer location-based sequencing and more precise referencing to make the comparisons flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing plans, including “entrance,” “outdoor seating,” “replaced,” and “recycling bins,” so the main changes are generally understandable. There is also some attempt to vary wording with “redesign,” “modification,” and “constructed.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “changes done” and “part of redesign process” are awkward, while “the serving area was demolished” suggests a building was removed rather than a function or counter being changed. Spelling and word-form slips such as “dinning” and “aera” also reduce precision. Aim for standard map-description collocations and accurate labels, such as “was converted into” or “was replaced by,” rather than relying on “constructed” for every change.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview contrast beginning “While kitchen…” and the comparison “Two staff dinning are replaced…”. However, control is uneven, and errors sometimes make relationships or timing unclear. For example, “kitchen, tables & chairs remains unchanged” has a subject–verb agreement problem and lacks an article before “kitchen”; “the entrance … remains same” also needs an article. The fragment “Where the new salad bar was built…” is not a complete sentence, and “hot meals was constructed” has a number-agreement error. Tense choices also shift between past and present when describing the redesign. Build complete sentences, keep past forms for changes and present forms for current features, and check agreement and articles.
