The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There has been a recent development in the college cafe. This diagram will show the difference between the Old cafe and the newly built design.
Noticed that the main area from the old design, changed dramatically.Inside the cafe, you will still see the tables and chairs situated in the middle area. They removed the staff dining area and replaced it with take away food and coffee bar. In the far left corner, you can see that they added a new stand for people who like a healthy option, like the salad bar.It has been reported that the amount of recycle material has been increased over time, therefore, they replaced the old bin to a bigger recycling bin on the far right side.Toilets remained at the south corner area inside the cafe located beside the big recycle bin.The Kitchen remain almost the same with the addition of hot meals where students and staff can enjoy. If you look at the outside layout of the cafe you can see that they added more seating and barbeque in the left side of sitting area.
Overall, the new upgrade in the cafe makes it more enjoyable and a fun place to hang out with friends and colleagues.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important changes, including the replacement of the staff dining rooms with takeaway and coffee facilities, the addition of a salad bar, and the new outdoor seating and barbecue. You also note that the kitchen and toilets remain in place, giving the reader a useful comparison. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the recycling bins are described as a “bigger” bin, although the plan only shows a change to recycling bins, and the outdoor seating is not described in detail. The overview focuses on the cafe being more enjoyable rather than summarising its main spatial changes. A clearer overview of the major redesign, followed by precise descriptions of the new facilities and unchanged features, would make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows a generally understandable order, moving from the interior changes to the kitchen and then the outdoor area. Linking expressions such as “They removed” and “If you look at the outside layout” help signal changes in focus. However, the information is presented in one long body paragraph, so the overview and supporting details are not clearly separated. Some transitions are abrupt, particularly the move from the recycling bins to the toilets and then the kitchen. The phrase “therefore” also introduces an explanation about increased recycling that is not shown in the plans. Use a brief overview paragraph and group related changes into separate paragraphs, with straightforward comparisons such as “whereas” or “while,” to make progression clearer and cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “situated,” “replaced,” “remained,” and “outdoor seating,” and the main changes are usually understandable. However, some choices are informal or imprecise for an academic report: “hang out with friends,” “fun place,” and “new stand” do not describe the plan as precisely as possible. There are also awkward combinations such as “amount of recycle material” and “bigger recycling bin”; the diagram identifies recycling bins but gives no information about their size or the amount of material. Aim for neutral, location-focused language and accurate facility names. This would give you more flexibility and precision without making the description sound conversational.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the changes can be understood. Some grammatical errors remain, however. The opening “There has been a recent development” is followed by “This diagram will show,” which shifts unnecessarily into the future; a present-tense description is more suitable. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “The Kitchen remain,” and the sentence beginning “Noticed that” is a fragment. Punctuation also needs attention: there are missing spaces after full stops and commas, and several ideas run together without clear sentence boundaries. Practise complete sentences with accurate subject–verb agreement, and use consistent present or past forms when describing the plans.
