Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans of a cafe are being displayed before and after being developed

Overall, a lot of changes have taken place and the new design has significant improvements, including separate serving areas for food. Outdoor seating and barbecue area is introduced. On the contrary, toilets, the location of the recycling bin and the kitchen remain the same.

Before the redesign, the cafe contained very basic facilities. Providing one serving point for food and drinks as well. However, staff were given separate dining rooms. A single recycling bin along the toilets. Kitchen is located in the back of the serving area.

After the advancement, the serving points for food are increased and distributed according to the type of serving. The rooms that were for staff have been redesigned and converted into a coffee bar and takeaway food. A new salad bar along with barbecue place is introduced. More than one recycle bin is provided in the todays cafe but the toilets remain the same. Outdoor seating facility is introduced.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main contrast between the original café and its redesigned version, including the new coffee bar, takeaway area, salad bar and outdoor seating, and you note that the kitchen and toilets remain. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers the main stages of change. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the original plan shows a bin, not a recycling bin, and the current plan has recycling bins in the same position; the kitchen is in the upper-left corner, rather than “in the back of the serving area.” The overview’s claim of “significant improvements” is evaluative rather than a neutral description. To develop the report further, describe the new southern doors and barbecue location, and explain more precisely how the serving counter changed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph on the original layout and one on the current café. Time markers such as “Before the redesign” and “After the advancement” help distinguish the two plans, and the main changes are generally easy to follow. Some links between details are less clear, however. The opening overview combines several changes in a list, while the final paragraph moves from serving points to staff rooms, the salad bar, bins and outdoor seating without a strong spatial or comparative sequence. The fragment “A single recycling bin along the toilets” also interrupts the flow. Grouping features by location or by what was retained versus added would make progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “redesign,” “separate dining rooms,” “converted,” and “outdoor seating,” so the reader can understand the main changes. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “serving points” and “distributed according to the type of serving,” but these are not always natural or precise for describing a plan. “Recycle bin” is an inaccurate label for the current “recycling bins,” and “advancement” does not fit the meaning of a redesign. Aim for concise, conventional map vocabulary such as “counter,” “facility,” “located,” and “replaced by.” More precise wording would help distinguish the original single bin from the new recycling bins and clarify the different food-service areas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is some variety in sentence forms, including the overview sentence with “including” and the clause “the toilets remain the same,” and most of the intended meaning is recoverable. However, several grammatical errors remain. The opening sentence lacks a clear main verb construction (“The plans … are being displayed”), and “Providing one serving point for food and drinks as well” is a fragment. Articles and agreement also need attention: “Kitchen is located” should be “The kitchen is located,” while “Outdoor seating and barbecue area is introduced” needs a plural subject or a revised construction. The phrase “in the todays cafe” has an incorrect possessive form. Use complete sentences and check articles, subject–verb agreement and tense consistency when describing the two plans.
