The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan depicts the layout of the college cafe before and after it was redesigned.

Overall, it is evident that the major addition after the redesign has been the outdoor seating area. The salad bar and barbecue sections also included in updated design. Furthermore, the replacement of staff dining rooms into take away food and coffee bar was an notable feature.

The old layout of the cafe was an very simple with fewer sections, but after the refurbishment the cafe now included the several new sections.

The first and major addition is outdoor seating area where extra space is included for customers. The salad bar and barbecue sections have been included in the updated version of the cafe.

Looking at the layout in more detail, the area of recycling has been increased with more bins; furthermore, the staff dinning rooms converted into coffee and take away sections. In contrast, the area of the kitchen remains same in the updated design.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You provide a clear overview of several major changes, especially the addition of outdoor seating and the conversion of the staff dining rooms into takeaway and coffee areas. You also correctly note that the kitchen remains in the same location. These points address the main purpose of comparing the plans. However, some details are inaccurate or too general: the recycling bins replace the single bin rather than showing an increased area, and the response does not mention the hot-meals counter or the two new doors to the outdoor area. The central tables and chairs and the toilets also remain, which would strengthen the comparison. More precise reporting of these features would make the account more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction and an overview, and it uses some linking expressions, including “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “In contrast.” However, the progression is not consistently clear: the outdoor seating, salad bar and barbecue are repeated in the overview and again in the body, while the final paragraph shifts between recycling, the former staff rooms and the kitchen without a clear organising principle. The two body paragraphs also do not develop distinct stages or areas of the plan. Grouping changes by location—for example, internal changes first and outdoor additions second—and avoiding repeated points would create a clearer overall progression. Some transitions currently connect ideas mechanically rather than showing their precise relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned space, including “layout,” “redesigned,” “refurbishment,” “replacement,” and “converted.” These choices make the main changes understandable. However, some wording is imprecise or awkward, such as “the area of recycling has been increased with more bins,” which misrepresents the plan, and “extra space is included for customers,” which could be expressed more specifically as outdoor seating. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “dinning” for “dining,” and repeated use of “sections” and “included.” Aim for precise plan vocabulary such as “was replaced by,” “was added,” and “remained unchanged,” while varying repeated nouns and checking spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the comparison introduced by “In contrast.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in articles, verb forms and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “the major addition … has been the outdoor seating area” is followed by “The salad bar and barbecue sections also included,” which lacks a finite verb; “an notable feature” has an incorrect article; and “the cafe was an very simple” contains an unnecessary article and incorrect article choice. “The cafe now included” also uses an unsuitable tense for the present-day plan. Practise accurate article use and consistent present or past forms, and proofread each sentence for a complete verb structure.
