The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The map illustrates changes to a cafe of a college after redesigning and how it used to look like before.

Overall, the used to be smaller, however after redesigning more area has been added to it. There is no special seating for the staff anymore, and now different foods have their own serving areas.

Previously, kitchen window was the only area for serving the food which now only serves hot meals. In addition, salad bar has been added in the west and an outdoor barbecue in the southwest. Similarly, dining rooms which were only accessable for the staff are also changed, the left room provides take away food and the right one has redesigned as coffee bar.

In eastern part of the cafe a single bin was available for all sorts of trash, which is now replaced from number of recycling bins. Seating in the middle of the cafe is untouched, and same for toilets. Moreover, outdoor seatng is now available right beside the barbecue.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main changes: the staff dining rooms have been repurposed, new food-service areas have been introduced, and outdoor facilities added. Most details match the plans, including the unchanged central seating and toilets, the replacement of the bin with recycling bins, and the new barbecue and outdoor seating. This covers the task well and supports your comparisons. However, the statement that the café “used to be smaller” is not clearly established by the plans, and “an outdoor barbecue in the southwest” could be more precisely described as outside the building. You also say the kitchen window was the only serving area, whereas the plan labels a serving area beside the kitchen. More precise reporting of these spatial details would strengthen an otherwise well-focused summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into a brief introduction and overview followed by paragraphs comparing the service areas and other features. The progression from the kitchen and new counters to the eastern wall and outdoor area is generally easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Previously,” “In addition,” “Similarly,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between points. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical or the reference is unclear: “Similarly” does not express a clear comparison, and “which” in “dining rooms which were only accessible for the staff are also changed” makes the sentence cumbersome. The final sentence repeats the outdoor seating point already mentioned. To make the organisation more fluent, group related changes together and use fewer, more precise transitions, while avoiding repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned plan, including “replaced,” “serving areas,” “recycling bins,” and “untouched.” These choices communicate the main changes, and the response attempts more specific terms such as “southwest” and “eastern part.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “after redesigning” is not natural for describing the café’s renovation, “available for all sorts of trash” is informal, and “replaced from number of recycling bins” does not express the change idiomatically. There are also spelling errors in “accessable” and “seatng.” Use standard plan-description vocabulary such as “redesigned,” “was replaced by,” and “located,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the adequate range more precise and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which” and “however,” and the main meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, sentence structure, and verb forms. For example, “the used to be smaller” lacks a clear subject, while “after redesigning more area has been added to it” uses an awkward construction and does not clearly identify who or what was redesigned. In “the right one has redesigned as coffee bar,” the passive form and article are missing; a clearer structure would be “the right room has been converted into a coffee bar.” “In eastern part” also needs an article. Aim for complete, well-formed sentences and check articles and passive constructions, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
