Student answer (Band 6.5)

The information provided in the given maps illustrates the layout of a college cafe before the redesign and the cureent view of the same cafe right now.

Overall, it is quite clear that the layout of the old cafe was straightforward and simple compared with the new once. Moreover, a noteable change is the replacement of staff dining rooms into a coffe bar and take away food as well as the outdoor seating by including multiple tables and chairs.

Before the cafe redesign, the building of the cafe is shape like L by which at the entrance is at the top right corner, and a bin for trash was at the east side of the cafe. Similarly, at the buttom right corner, there were some toilets located with a single entrance door. Furthermore, at the top center of the cafe, two separate rooms were seen which was mainly used for staff dining rooms. Likewise, the center area of the college cafe was occupied by tables and charis. Moreover, the top left corner area have one kitchen at the top and serving area where all the foods and dirnk served for customer was located just below the kitchen.

Current view of the college cafe, the main entrance gates, toilets, kitchen and tables and chairs at the center of the cafe remain unchanged, while a small bin is replaced by some large recycling bins. Further, the two separated rooms which was previously used for staff dinning is now use as a coffee bar and take away food room. In addition, at the west of the cafe a new salad bar shop is opened. Coversely, the serving area is now replaced by hot meals where customers is now enjoy fast food here. Nevertheless, in the south of the college cafe, an outdoor seating area is now indroduced for outdoor user with a barbecue area at the west side and three tables with six charis and two tables with four charis.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover the main transformation and provide a clear overview: the staff dining rooms become a coffee bar and takeaway area, and outdoor seating is added. You also report the kitchen, toilets and central seating as remaining, and describe the new salad bar and barbecue, so the key changes are well selected and generally accurate. Some details are imprecise or over-generalised: the outdoor area has four tables, but the description of their seating is not clearly reported, and “the main entrance gates … remain unchanged” is less explicit than identifying their position on the east wall. The claim that the old café was L-shaped is not clearly supported by the plan. Overall, the response addresses the task and extends its main features, though a few details could be more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by separate descriptions of the former and current layouts. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and time markers such as “Before the cafe redesign” and “Current view” help signal the stages. You also use a range of linking expressions, including “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “In addition.” However, these are sometimes overused, making the prose sound list-like, and some links do not express the relationship accurately; “Conversely” does not introduce a genuine contrast in the sentence about hot meals. The long sentences also combine several locations without a clear hierarchy. Grouping changes by area and using fewer, more precise transitions would make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “replacement,” “occupied,” “located,” “recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and you attempt more specific terms such as “east side” and “top left corner.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions reduce accuracy: “cureent,” “noteable,” “coffe,” and “charis” appear, while “the new once” and “shop is opened” are not natural descriptions of the plan. “Fast food” is also not equivalent to the labelled “hot meals.” Aim for accurate plan vocabulary and collocations, such as “the former staff rooms were converted into…” and “a hot-meal counter replaced the serving area.” Proofreading spelling would improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using clauses such as “which was mainly used for staff dining rooms” and “while a small bin is replaced…”. The response is generally understandable, but errors in sentence structure, tense, agreement and articles occur across the description. For example, “the building of the cafe is shape like L” needs a passive form (“is shaped”), and “the top left corner area have one kitchen” has subject–verb disagreement. In the present-day account, “customers is now enjoy” combines incompatible verb forms, while “the two separated rooms which was” has agreement and tense problems. Keep past descriptions consistently in the past and current features in the present, and check each clause for a clear subject and correctly formed verb. More accurate control of these patterns is needed.
