The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrate a before and after renovated cafe in university. Initially, it served only limited varities of foods to the students and the staff, however after redesign, cafe was equipped with many facilities that serves a large group of people.

According to the first blueprint, food and beverage serving section was attached with the kitchen, whereas the main hall was mainly divided in to two parts namely staff and students dining rooms where pupils can relax and enjoy their meals. Near the main entrance, Toilets and bins were located at one corner. Overall, its a small and decent cafe that simply served its purpose.

After renovation, the cafe established with many amenities, such as separate hot and cold food sections, where individuals can enjoy their food choices. Moreover, staff dining rooms were entirely replaced by take away food counter and coffee bar, which ultimately great options for people who does not have time to sit and enjoy their proper meal. Two more entrances on the sides, were installed to avoid congestion during rush hour, in addition to the main entrance, in addition to that, outdoor seating and barbecue port are new add-ons, where people can relax and enjoy the climate while having food.

Lastly, normal bin for all kinds of waste was swapped with recycling bins to separate different wastes. All together, it is a great cafe with numerous features with sustainable alternatives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main transformation and provide an overview: the café gains more food options and facilities, while the staff dining rooms are replaced and outdoor seating is added. Several details are accurately reported, including the hot-meal counter, takeaway and coffee areas, recycling bins, and barbecue. This meets the task well, with some features described in useful detail. However, a few points are unclear or inaccurate: the original plan shows a central tables-and-chairs area, not a hall divided into staff and student dining rooms, and the new doors lead from the southern wall to the outdoor seating rather than being “on the sides.” The claim that the café serves a “large group” is not shown by the plans. More precise spatial comparisons and a clearer account of the unchanged kitchen and toilets would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall structure: it introduces the plans, describes the original layout, then moves to the redesigned café and ends with a concluding comment. Time markers such as “Initially” and “After renovation” help signal the comparison. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The sentence beginning “Two more entrances…” repeats “in addition to” and combines several changes in a long, crowded sequence. “Near the main entrance” also makes the location of the toilets and bins less clear than the plan does. Grouping changes by location—for example, north wall, central area, and southern outdoor space—and using more precise referencing would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the redesign, including “blueprint,” “amenities,” “replaced,” “recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and some less common terms are attempted. At times, however, word choice or collocation is inaccurate or overly evaluative: “cafe established with many amenities” is not a natural description of a redesigned space, while “barbecue port” does not match the plan’s label. “Sustainable alternatives” is also a broad interpretation rather than a precise description of recycling bins. Spelling errors such as “varities” and “in to” reduce accuracy. Prefer neutral, map-specific language such as “was redesigned to include” and “barbecue area.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “whereas,” “which,” and “while,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “before and after renovated cafe in university” needs a more complete noun phrase, and “cafe was equipped” requires an article. In “options for people who does not have time,” the verb should agree with the plural “people.” The sentence beginning “Two more entrances on the sides, were installed” has an unnecessary comma and an unclear structure, while “in addition to” is repeated. Check articles and subject–verb agreement, and divide long sentences when they contain several separate changes.
