Student answer (Band 6.0)

The Maps illustrate the changes made to a college cafe after redesigning it.

Overall, a major change is made in the outdoor area by creating seating space and a new addition. Some small changes are done to the inner area of the cafe by repurposing existing space and additing small developments.

In the left side of the cafe a new salad bar is created on the far left wall. Inside the kitchen area the small platform which was previously used as a serving area is now used for serving Hot meals. There are no changes in the seating area inside the cafe and remain in the centre.

In the right half of the inner space, staff dining rooms have been converted into two separate space for take away orders and a coffee area respectively. The bins outside the toilets are replaced by recycling bins on the right side of the wall. An outdoor seating area is created just outside the cafe with two doors for easy access to the inside area. A barbecue area is created on the left corner of cafe facing the outside seating area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response identifies the main transformation clearly: the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee areas, a salad bar is added, and outdoor seating with a barbecue is created. It also notes that the kitchen, central seating and toilets remain, and that the waste facility becomes recycling bins. These details are generally accurate and provide a clear overview of the redesign. To make the account more fully developed, describe the outdoor arrangement more precisely—for example, the four tables outside—and clarify that the new salad bar is along the western wall. The statement that the barbecue is on the “left corner” is understandable but less precise than locating it immediately southwest of the building. Overall, the key changes are covered, though some spatial details are generalised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing changes inside and outside the café. The progression from the left side to the right and then outdoors is broadly logical, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In the right half” help guide the reader. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. The overview’s “Some small changes” does not sit comfortably with the substantial outdoor addition, and “There are no changes in the seating area inside the cafe and remain in the centre” has an unclear reference and interrupts the flow. Improve cohesion by grouping unchanged features together and using precise references such as “the central seating area.” Punctuation spacing, especially after commas, also makes the presentation less smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Vocabulary is adequate for describing a plan, with useful terms such as “repurposing,” “converted,” “recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating area.” The writer also attempts to distinguish the different facilities rather than relying entirely on basic words. Some choices are imprecise or awkward, however: “small platform” is not the clearest description of the serving counter, “two separate space” is an inaccurate form, and “facing the outside seating area” is less natural than describing the barbecue as adjacent to it. “Small developments” is also vague for the specific additions shown. More precise plan vocabulary and natural collocations would improve clarity and control, while retaining the generally understandable meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including passive constructions such as “have been converted” and “is created,” which suit a description of changes. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Some small changes are done” uses an unsuitable verb form, while “There are no changes in the seating area inside the cafe and remain in the centre” lacks a clear subject for “remain.” The phrase “two separate space” also has a number-agreement error, and “after redesigning it” is awkwardly formed in the opening. Review subject–verb agreement, plural forms, and sentence construction, especially when joining two clauses. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
