Student answer (Band 6.0)

The following two figures depict a college cafe before it was redesigned and its view after restructuring. Overall, four new features are added in cafe based on new plans such as Salad bar, Recycling, Barbecue, and Outdoor seating.

As illustrated in the old and new picture of college cafe, The serving area for food and drink is replaced by Hot meals in the new structure of cafe. In addition to this, take away food and coffee bar is introduced in place of staff dining rooms in the north side. Apart from this, four additional features are added in the cafe after redesigning. In the east side, Recycling section is introduced for proper disposal of waste. On the other hand, salad bar is constructed in the west location. Moreover, barbeque is builded outside of cafe on the left side of salad bar. Furthermore, seating area is added outside cafe from west to east. Thus, old structure of cafe is enhance by adding some new facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation clearly: the former serving counter becomes a hot-meals counter, the staff dining rooms are replaced by takeaway food and a coffee bar, and new facilities include a salad bar, recycling bins, barbecue and outdoor seating. Your overview also signals that the café has been upgraded, so the response covers the task and includes relevant comparisons. This is close to a fuller, more developed account, but some details are unclear or imprecise: the outdoor seating is described as extending “from west to east,” and the barbecue is placed “on the left side of salad bar,” rather than clearly locating it outside to the south-west. You could also note that the kitchen, central tables and toilets remain in place.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall structure, moving from an introductory overview to a series of comparisons between the old and new layouts. Linking phrases such as “In addition to this,” “Apart from this” and “Moreover” help signal added information. However, the progression is not always smooth: the overview lists four new features, then the body repeats them one by one, while “Thus” introduces a general conclusion that adds little. Several transitions are used mechanically, and the long second paragraph groups many separate changes together. Organise the details into clearer groups—for example, changes inside the café and additions outside—and use more precise referencing so each location is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned space, including “replaced,” “introduced,” “constructed” and “outside.” These choices make the main changes understandable, and terms such as “north side” and “west location” show an attempt to describe position. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, however: “new structure of cafe” and “proper disposal of waste” are less natural for this plan, while “features are added” is repeated. There are also spelling or word-form problems in “barbeque” and “builded.” Aim for precise plan vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “the café layout,” “recycling bins were installed,” and “a barbecue area was added.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including an overview sentence and longer comparisons using “As illustrated” and “In addition to this.” Most of the intended meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “four new features are added” and “barbeque is builded” use incorrect verb forms for describing completed changes; “in cafe” also needs an article. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “The serving area” after a comma, and “old and new picture” does not agree in number with the two plans. Review articles, plural forms and past-tense passive constructions. Using forms such as “was replaced,” “were added” and “the café” would improve accuracy while preserving your range of sentence structures.
