Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The plan describes details of the college cafe before and after redesigning.
Overall before redesigning the cafe, there was a kitchen, serving area, staff dining rooms, a bin and toilets. However, after redesigning there were some major changes inside such as it included hot meals, salad bar, take away food, coffee bar and even recycling bins. Moreover, outdoor sitting for people was also present to enjoy their meals.
In previous model of college cafeteria, there was kitchen which remained same in new design too but the serving area for all food and drinks was replaced with hot meals section. The staff dining rooms in previous model were changed with counters of take away food and coffee bar, with additional salad bar in corner of the main area.
The bin was replaced as recycling bin. However, the toilet area remained same as before. There was an additional area allocated for barbecue section in modern design with also outdoor sitting area for students to enjoy their meals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear overview of the redesign, identifying the new food facilities and outdoor seating while noting that the kitchen and toilets remain. The comparisons are generally accurate: the former serving area becomes a hot-meals counter, staff dining rooms are replaced by takeaway and coffee facilities, and the bin becomes recycling bins. You also mention the salad bar and barbecue. This covers the main changes and keeps the report focused. Some details are less fully reported, however: the new southern doors and the four outdoor tables are not described, and the central seating area’s continuation is not made explicit. More precise spatial detail would make the account more complete and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by comparisons of the interior and then the outdoor additions. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Moreover” help signal the relationships between points, and the reader can follow the main changes. At times, though, the connections feel mechanical or the reference is not fully clear. For example, “In previous model” and “The staff dining rooms in previous model” repeat the same framing, while “There was an additional area allocated” does not clearly connect the barbecue and outdoor seating. Use more varied transitions and organise details by location—north, west, east, and south—to make progression more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “serving area,” “recycling bin,” “counters,” and “outdoor sitting area,” so the changes are understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “replaced with” and “allocated.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing a plan: “previous model” is not the best way to refer to the earlier layout, “outdoor sitting” is less suitable than “outdoor seating,” and “in corner of the main area” is vague. Repeated use of “area” and “design” also limits flexibility. Choose standard plan-description terms and use precise location vocabulary to improve clarity and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “the kitchen … remained same … but the serving area … was replaced” and the relative clause “which remained same in new design too.” The overall meaning is clear, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles are missing in phrases such as “there was kitchen” and “in previous model”; “remained same” needs “remained the same”; and “with also outdoor sitting area” has an awkward word order and missing article. The opening phrase “before and after redesigning” is also not formed naturally. Check articles and sentence patterns, and revise each sentence for complete, idiomatic structure while retaining your attempts at complex comparisons.
