Student answer (Band 6.0)

The first outlined diagram is the college cafe before renovation and the second one is after renovating is done. In the both diagrams, there is just a small dissimilarity between them which in mentioned in below paragraphs.

Before renovation, cafe didn't have enough space for outdoor seating. Now, cafe has both outdoor and indoor seating. They have now changed staff dinning rooms and take aways food for first room and coffee bar for the second one. There is no staff dinning room from now on. Importantly, cafe have barbecue with outdoor seating so customers can enjoy that also.

Then, they have changed bins to the recycling bin, though they didn't change the space. The goal is to have cafe envirnoment friendly. There is a space for salad bar in cafe where customers grab different kinds of the salads. Salad bar is located just opposite to the recycling bins. From now on, hot meals are only served in area where it used to be serving area for variety kinds of foods and drinks. There is no change in washrooms, kitchen, and indoor tables and chairs . It remains as it is.

Overall, new platforms are constructed in cafe such as salad bar, barbecue and outdoor seating. Bins, serving area and employee dinning rooms are changed to recycling bins, hot meals, take away food and coffe bar respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation clearly: the café gains outdoor seating, a barbecue and a salad bar, while the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee-bar areas. You also correctly note that the kitchen, toilets and central tables and chairs remain, and that the serving counter is now for hot meals. This covers the key before-and-after features and includes a useful overall summary. To make the account more complete and precise, describe the new southern doors and the four outdoor tables, and avoid unsupported explanations such as saying the recycling bins were introduced to make the café environmentally friendly. The overview is relevant, but some details are less fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph about the main changes, further details, and a concluding overview. The sequence is generally understandable, and phrases such as “Before renovation” and “Overall” help signal the stages of the description. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear. “In the both diagrams” and “which in mentioned in below paragraphs” make the opening difficult to follow, while “Then” does not clearly show how the next feature relates to the previous one. The final overview also repeats several details rather than synthesising them. Grouping changes by location—for example, the north and west interior, then the southern outdoor area—would create clearer progression and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “outdoor seating,” “recycling bins,” “salad bar,” and “serving area,” so the reader can identify most of the changes. There is also some attempt at more specific language, such as “located just opposite.” However, word choice and spelling are often inaccurate or informal: “dinning” appears repeatedly, “coffe” is misspelled, and “platforms” is not an appropriate term for the new facilities. Phrases such as “small dissimilarity” and “different kinds of the salads” are also unnatural. Aim for precise plan-description vocabulary and check spelling and collocations; this would make the account more fluent and reduce moments when the reader has to interpret your meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including “There is no change in washrooms, kitchen, and indoor tables and chairs” and a clause beginning “where it used to be…”. However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in articles, agreement, verb forms and sentence construction. For example, “In the both diagrams” has an incorrect article pattern, “cafe have” lacks subject–verb agreement, and “the second one is after renovating is done” is awkwardly formed. “There is no staff dinning room from now on” also uses an unsuitable tense construction for describing the current plan. Use consistent present and past forms to compare the plans, and practise accurate article use and complete sentence patterns. These corrections would make your meaning more consistently clear.
