The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustrated plan shows a college cafe before and after it was redesigned. Significant changes had been made in new plan with addition of more food options, extension of outdoor sitting area and a newly added food service area. In the old plan a serving area was present in front of kitchen section which now changed to hot meals food section. In place of staff dining rooms two new sections i.e. takeway food and coffee bar are added. On left side of cafe a new salad bar is introduced which was not present in old plan. Tables and chairs are still present in center of cafe whereas a new outdoor sitting area has been added with barbecue facility on its one side. The smaller bin is now replaced with huge recycling bins in front of toilets. Overall interior and exterior of cafe has been fully redesigned. With addition of more sections offering a variety of food options from coffee, to salad, to fresh barbecue with a take away food service area so that students can grab their food easily and within time. Seating space has also been improved to accomodate a large number of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main transformation clearly: the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee areas, a salad bar is added, and outdoor seating with a barbecue appears. You also note that the kitchen, central tables and toilets remain, and that the serving counter is now for hot meals. These details address the task and give a clear overall picture. However, some claims are broader than the plan supports: “fully redesigned” overlooks the features that remain unchanged, and “accommodate a large number of people” is not established by the diagram. The description would be stronger with more precise comparisons of the layout, such as the new southern doors and the recycling bins replacing the single bin.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response includes relevant information, but its progression is not consistently clear. It moves from an opening overview to individual changes and then to a concluding summary, yet the final two sentences repeat the ideas of added food options and improved seating rather than adding a distinct conclusion. Several details are also crowded into one long sequence, especially the sentence beginning “With addition of more sections,” which is grammatically incomplete and makes the relationship between ideas harder to follow. Organise the report into a brief overview followed by a paragraph on interior changes and one on the outdoor area and retained features. Use linking phrases selectively and make each sentence’s purpose clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “serving area,” “takeaway food,” “salad bar,” “recycling bins” and “outdoor seating,” so the main changes are understandable. There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “extension” and “variety of food options.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “food service area” is vague, “huge recycling bins” adds a size not shown, and “fresh barbecue” does not accurately name the barbecue area. Spelling and form issues such as “takeway” and “accomodate” also reduce accuracy. More precise plan vocabulary and careful spelling would make the description more flexible and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple statements and some longer structures, including the contrast in “Tables and chairs are still present … whereas a new outdoor sitting area has been added.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “in new plan” needs an article, and “which now changed to hot meals food section” has an incorrect verb construction and an unclear noun phrase. The final sentence beginning “With addition…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. There are also awkward sentence boundaries in the conclusion. Aim to form complete sentences, check articles and verb forms, and use complex clauses only when their grammatical relationships are clear.
