Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans illustrate a college map before the changes were made and after how it after it has been revamped.
The previous plan of the cafe shows a very conjested approach as everything has been fit into a single space. The entrance/exit is on the east side with the bin just adjacent to it.The washrooms are just near the entrance, moving forward there are two segregated dining rooms for the staff and on the west side is the kitchen with a serving area for food and rinks.
The new plan shows how the bins have been converted into recycle bins, the toilets have been kept unchanged. The staff dining area has been converted into a takeaway counter and a coffee bar.An addition of salad bar has been made right in front of the kitchen. The negative space in the middle has been utilized for seating purpose while more seating has been added in the outdoor area with addition of a barbecue grill. There are seperate entrance and exit for for the outdoor seating area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important changes, including the replacement of the staff dining rooms with takeaway and coffee facilities, the addition of a salad bar, recycling bins and outdoor seating, and the retention of the toilets. These details are generally grounded in the plans. However, the response lacks a clear overview of the main transformation, and some points are unclear or inaccurate: the toilets are in the bottom-right corner, not “near the entrance,” and the salad bar is along the western wall rather than “right in front of the kitchen.” You also say the central space was used for seating, although tables and chairs were already present before. Develop the comparison more precisely, including the new southern doors and the barbecue’s position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable sequence: it describes the former layout first and then the current one, which helps the reader follow the comparison. Phrases such as “The previous plan” and “The new plan” make the shift between stages clear. This is a solid overall structure, but the information is compressed into two long paragraphs, and several details are joined together without enough punctuation, as in “The toilets have been kept unchanged. The staff dining area…” The directional sequence in the first paragraph (“moving forward”) is also difficult to follow on a plan. Use separate, clearly organised paragraphs and group features by location or type of change. More precise linking and referencing would make the progression smoother and less list-like.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing changes and facilities, including “converted,” “addition,” “outdoor area” and “seating.” However, several word choices are imprecise or informal for an IELTS plan description. “Conjested approach” does not clearly describe the layout, while “negative space” is not an appropriate term for the central seating area. “Recycle bins” should be “recycling bins,” and “food and rinks” appears to be a misspelling of “food and drinks.” There are also spelling errors such as “seperate” and “conjested.” Aim for accurate, conventional terms such as “layout,” “central area,” and “serving counter,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the description clearer and more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more developed sentence forms, including clauses linked with “while” and phrases such as “with addition of a barbecue grill.” The main meaning is usually understandable, but some errors affect accuracy and fluency. The opening sentence contains a faulty construction: “before the changes were made and after how it after it has been revamped.” In “The previous plan … shows,” the tense is inconsistent with describing a past layout, and “There are seperate entrance and exit” has a number-agreement problem. Repeated words and missing punctuation also occur, for example “for for” and “space.The.” Use consistent past and present tenses for the two plans, check singular and plural forms, and proofread sentence boundaries.
