Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plan shows the changes in the cafe design before and after the restructuring.
After redesigning the cafe, different additions and restructuring are done. More entrances and exits are added and the outdoor seating is arranged for the barbecue portion. Several changes are made in the previous structure like replacing staff dining rooms with a coffee bar and a place for take away food.
After entering from the right side of the cafe, previously there were two staff dining rooms right in front, which are now replaced. One with a take away food area and other by a coffee bar. On the left side of the enterance were bins which are replaced by recycling bins. In the corner, there are toilets just like before.
On the front wider side of the cafe, an entrance and an exit are added. In addition, a babecue section is designed outdoor and 5 dining tables with different seating capacity are added. On the back side of the cafe, there is a kitchen. On the front side of the kitchen was previously a drinks serving area which is now replaced by a hot meals sections. Moreover, a salad bar is also added to the left wall of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main purpose of the plans and report several important changes, including the replacement of the staff dining rooms, the new coffee bar and takeaway area, the hot-meals counter, recycling bins, salad bar and outdoor facilities. Most locations are broadly consistent with the plans. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the outdoor area has four tables, not five, and the new doors are on the southern wall rather than simply on the “front wider side.” The overview also says entrances and exits were added, although the plans show the existing entrance on the east side and new access to outdoor seating. The central seating area and the fact that the kitchen and toilets remain are worth highlighting more clearly. This covers the task, but some features are less fully and precisely reported than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence: it begins with a general summary, then describes changes around the entrance and interior before moving to the southern outdoor area and kitchen side. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and linking phrases such as “In addition” and “Moreover” make relationships between points understandable. At times, however, the spatial progression is difficult to follow because directions such as “front,” “back,” and “right side” are not anchored consistently to the plans. The phrase “After entering from the right side” also makes the reader infer which entrance is meant. Use a consistent orientation—north, south, east and west—and group features by area to make the comparisons more precise and cohesion less dependent on repeated sequencing phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a redesign, including “replaced,” “recycling bins,” “outdoor seating,” and “salad bar.” These terms help communicate the main changes, and the meaning is generally clear. Some choices are imprecise or awkward for a plan description: “the barbecue portion,” “front wider side,” and “different seating capacity” do not describe the features naturally or accurately. There are also spelling errors in “enterance” and “babecue,” and “sections” is an unsuitable plural in “a hot meals sections.” Aim for precise spatial and functional vocabulary, such as “southern wall,” “outdoor area,” and “dining tables.” More accurate collocations and careful spelling would make the description more fluent and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the relative clause in “which are now replaced” and the comparison “just like before.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “After redesigning the cafe, different additions and restructuring are done” uses an awkward tense and passive construction; “One with a take away food area and other by a coffee bar” is a sentence fragment; and “On the front side of the kitchen was previously a drinks serving area” has an unclear word order. There are also missing spaces after commas and inconsistent article use. Practise forming complete comparison sentences with clear subjects and consistent past/present tenses, while retaining some complex structures.
