Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies one relevant change: the former staff dining rooms have been replaced by a coffee bar and a takeaway-food area. However, it stops mid-sentence after “moreover, the” and gives no overview of the main changes or comparison of the plans. Important features such as the salad bar, recycling bins, outdoor seating and barbecue are not reported, and the kitchen and toilets are not mentioned. The opening says the café has been modified but does not summarise how its layout has changed. The response is also 95 words below the required minimum, leaving too little information to address the task adequately. To improve, complete the report and select several key changes, including what stayed the same.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introductory sentence is followed by “First of all” and a comparison between the old staff dining rooms and the new facilities. This gives the reader a starting point, but the response has no developed progression because it ends after “moreover, the”. The unfinished transition promises another point without providing it, and there is no concluding overview or clear grouping of changes. The connector “moreover” also begins a new idea that is never completed. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the main changes, then connect related details—for example, changes inside the café and additions outside—so the information forms a complete, logical account.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a few task-relevant terms, including “staff dining rooms”, “Coffee bar” and “food take away”, so the reader can identify the change being described. However, the vocabulary is limited and some phrases are awkward or imprecise: “newly modifications” is not a natural collocation, while “newly built” suggests construction rather than a change in use. “Food take away” would be more naturally expressed as “takeaway food”. The repeated use of “new” also limits variety. Build a more precise range for describing plans, such as “was replaced by”, “was converted into”, “remained unchanged” and “was added”. This would make comparisons clearer and more appropriate to an IELTS map report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts a complex opening clause, “These plans illustrates the information about a cafe which is now modified”, but there are clear problems with agreement and tense: the plural subject “plans” requires “illustrate”, and the present perfect passive (“has been modified”) would better describe a completed redesign. The phrase “different newly modifications … can be seen” also has an unclear grammatical structure. The later sentence begins with “if we have a look” and then shifts to “are now replaced”, making the construction awkward; “have now been replaced” is more suitable. The final clause is incomplete after “moreover, the”. Aim for complete sentences with consistent tense, and check subject–verb agreement, articles and punctuation.
