The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
These maps compare a college cafe before and after it was redeigned. Overall, the cafe became more advanced with several facilities were introduced and some existing features being improvised. The most significant change was the facility of salad bar, barbeque section and outdoor seating. Before the changes, the serving area was located with the kitchen, while staff dinning rooms stood next to it. After the development, the serving area had been replaced by the hot meals section. In addition, salad bar was constructed in the middle left side, just beside the tables and chairs. However, the bins remained in the same location throughout the period. The outdoor seating area and the barbeque station was also the prominent feature after renovation. Tables and chairs were placed outside the cafe as well as the barbeque station. The entry and exit doors were made on the left and right side next to the toilets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the overall redesign and several important additions, including the salad bar, outdoor seating and barbecue, and you compare the former serving area with the new hot-meals counter. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the bins did not remain unchanged, as the single bin became recycling bins, and the new entrance doors are on the southern wall, not on the left and right beside the toilets. The account also omits key changes such as the take-away food and coffee-bar sections replacing the staff dining rooms. Your overview is relevant, but phrases such as “more advanced” do not clearly describe the layout changes. More precise coverage of the north and south areas would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by details about the former and current café. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Before the changes,” and “After the development” help signal the comparison. However, the progression is not consistently clear because details from different parts of the plan are mixed together, and the final sentence gives a misleading account of the doors. Some connections are also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “After” and “In addition.” Grouping the changes by location—for example, the north wall, interior, and southern outdoor area—and using clearer references would make the information easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a redesign, including “replaced,” “constructed,” “prominent feature,” and “throughout the period.” These choices generally communicate the main ideas. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “more advanced” is vague for a café layout, “facility of salad bar” is not idiomatic, and “improvised” does not mean that existing features were improved. There are also spelling errors in “redeigned” and “dinning,” and “barbeque” is conventionally spelled “barbecue.” Aim for precise plan-description language such as “was added,” “was converted into,” and “was located along the western wall.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “while staff dinning rooms stood next to it” and “After the development, the serving area had been replaced…”. The main meaning is usually understandable, but some errors affect accuracy. In “with several facilities were introduced,” the clause structure is faulty; use “as several facilities were introduced.” The phrase “the facility of salad bar” also needs an article and a different grammatical construction, while “the outdoor seating area and the barbeque station was” has a plural subject and requires “were.” The final sentence’s description of where doors were made is also grammatically awkward. More consistent control of articles, agreement, and sentence construction would improve clarity.
