The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
These plans illustrate the information about the structure of a cafe which has now been modified. Diferent modifications can be seen in the new design that is highly appreciated.
First of all, the staff dinning rooms are now replaced with the two major sections; ''Coffee bar'' and a ''Food take away'' area. Moreover, the area where the food and drinks were being served is now changed and hot meals section is built there.
Furthermore, Cafe also introduced an outdoor seating facility for it's customers. However, beside the seating area a barbecue section is now built which is in west bottom corner of the cafe.
Only the few main sections remain unchanged which includes; ''Tables'', ''Chairs'', ''Kitchen'' and the ''toilets''.
In the last, cafe also introduced a ''Salad bar'' which is located inside the cafe near the ''Hot meals'' section. Cafe made significant changes which inhance the entire structure of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify several important changes, including the replacement of the staff dining rooms with a coffee bar and takeaway area, the new outdoor seating and barbecue, and the addition of a salad bar. You also note that the kitchen, toilets and central seating remain. This gives the reader a relevant account of the redesign, with some key comparisons clearly reported. However, the overview is not explicit, and some details are inaccurate or unclear: the salad bar is on the western wall, not simply near the hot-meals section, and the hot-meals counter replaces the former serving area. The recycling bins and the new southern doors are omitted. More precise coverage and a clear summary of the main changes would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally understandable sequence: it describes changes to the northern rooms and serving area, then the outdoor facilities, and finally the features that remain. Paragraphing is not essential for this short report, but clearer grouping would help distinguish internal changes from additions outside. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” support progression, although “In the last” is an awkward transition and the repeated use of “Cafe” makes the flow somewhat mechanical. The final sentence repeats the general idea of significant change rather than drawing together the main contrasts. Use a concise overview first, then organise details by location or by unchanged and changed features, with more natural referencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “staff dining rooms,” “outdoor seating,” “barbecue section” and “Salad bar,” so the main features are usually identifiable. There is some range in describing change, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural for a map report: “the information about the structure,” “highly appreciated,” and “introduced an outdoor seating facility” do not describe the plans as directly as “show the layout” or “added outdoor seating.” Spelling errors such as “Diferent,” “dinning” and “inhance” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise verbs such as “replaced,” “remained” and “was added,” and avoid evaluative claims like “highly appreciated,” which are not supported by the plans.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which is located inside the cafe” and a contrast introduced by “However.” The main meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the area … is now changed and hot meals section is built there” has awkward tense and article use; “Only the few main sections remain unchanged which includes” has an incorrect article and subject–verb agreement; and “for it's customers” uses the wrong possessive form. The sentence beginning “In the last” is also not formed naturally. Practise accurate past-to-present comparisons, articles, agreement and possessives, and use punctuation to avoid fragments or unnecessary quotation marks around labels.
