The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams depict how a college cafe looked before it was redesigned and how it is looking in recent year. Overall, despite some features remaining the same, this small cafe has now transformed into a modern cafe, with significant changes in indoor and outdoor seating.
Before the cafe was redesigned, there was a kitchen in the northwest of the cafe with a serving area beside the kitchen. In east side of the cafe, there were two staff dining rooms. However, in the east-south side, there was a bin lying across the toilets. Moreover, there were tables and chairs in the center of the cafe.
In recent year, the cafe has transformed into a modern cafe with more amenities. The staff dining rooms were knocked down and developed into a take away food and a coffee bar. Serving area was converted into hot meals area. Salad bar is now design in the northwest side of the restaurant. Furthermore, there is also outdoor seating in redesigned cafe with barbecue setting. Although, kitchen, toilets, tables and chairs remained unchange. Bin is transformed into a recycle bin.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main transformation and give an overview that the café gained indoor and outdoor facilities, while noting that some features stayed the same. You also report several accurate changes, including the staff dining rooms becoming a takeaway area and coffee bar, the serving counter becoming a hot-meals area, and the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue. However, some locations are misreported: the staff dining rooms were along the north wall, not the east, and the salad bar is on the western wall rather than the northwest. The description of the bin as being “across the toilets” is unclear; it was on the eastern wall above the toilets. More precise coverage of the new layout and these spatial relationships would make the summary more complete and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence: an introduction and overview, followed by the original layout and then the redesigned café. This makes the main comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “Although” help connect points. At times, however, the links are mechanical or do not express the relationship accurately. For example, “Although” introduces a statement about unchanged features but is not followed by a contrasting clause, and “However” does not clearly connect the staff rooms with the bin’s location. Grouping changes by area—north, west, centre, and south—and using clearer contrasts such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile” would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “redesigned,” “transformed,” “amenities,” and “remained.” These choices communicate the broad changes, but several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a café layout. “Knocked down and developed into” is an awkward way to describe the replacement of rooms, while “barbecue setting” and “recycle bin” are less suitable than the standard labels for these facilities. Some repetition of “cafe” and “transformed” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise location and change vocabulary, such as “along the western wall,” “was replaced by,” and “recycling bins.” This would make the description more natural and exact without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall, despite…” and the final sentence contrasting unchanged features with changes. Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “how it is looking in recent year,” where the tense and article are incorrect, and “Salad bar is now design,” which needs an article and a passive form (“The salad bar was added”). “Kitchen, toilets, tables and chairs remained unchange” also has agreement and verb-form problems. Review articles, past-tense passive constructions, and subject–verb agreement, and check punctuation around sentence openings such as “Although.” More consistent control of these forms would make the comparisons clearer.
