The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps compare the layout of a campus cafeteria before it was redeveloped and how it is upgraded now.

Overall, it can be seen that backyard is transformed into barbeque and outdoor seating area. Additionally, different divisions have been made in order to reduce the traffic at one space. Meanwhile, washroom and pantry area remained as it was before.

Initially, there was a common counter in kitchen for serving all food and drinks in the old design. But it was then changed to only serve the hot meals. Staff dining rooms are replaced with take away food and coffee bar. Moreover, salad bar is introduced to start the meal with fresh veggies. Bin has been enlarged to collect green and dry waste differently.

It is evident that, outdoor seating has been introduced along with indoor area with brand new furniture to attract more consumers. At last, barbecue area is built outside on purpose for the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation—new outdoor seating and a barbecue—and report several key internal changes, including the replacement of the staff dining rooms with takeaway and coffee facilities. This covers the task well and gives a clear overall impression. Some details, however, are inaccurate or insufficiently developed: the outdoor area was added to the south of the café, rather than a “backyard” being transformed, and the bin was replaced by recycling bins; the plan does not show it being enlarged or separating waste types. The statement that the changes were made “to reduce the traffic” and attract consumers adds purposes not shown in the plans. More precise location comparisons and mention that the toilets and central seating remain would make the account more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes inside and outside the café. This makes the main progression easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Meanwhile,” and “Moreover” help connect points, although some transitions feel mechanical or do not express a clear relationship. For example, “At last” is not a natural way to introduce the barbecue, and “Initially” does not clearly signal a comparison between the two plans. The reference to “backyard” is also unclear because the plans show a new outdoor area along the southern wall. Grouping all unchanged features together and using more precise spatial references would strengthen the flow and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “redeveloped,” “divisions,” “introduced,” and “outdoor seating,” and the reader can generally understand the changes you describe. There are also some imprecise or unnatural choices: “campus cafeteria” is less faithful to the task’s “college cafe,” “backyard” does not accurately describe the area shown, and “Bin has been enlarged” misrepresents the recycling-bin change. Phrases such as “start the meal with fresh veggies” and “on purpose for the people” are conversational or awkward for an objective report. Aim for neutral, map-focused wording such as “a salad bar was added along the western wall” and “a barbecue area was created outside.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview clause “it can be seen that” and the contrast introduced by “But.” Most sentences communicate their main point, but some grammatical errors remain. In “that backyard is transformed,” the noun needs a determiner and the tense should reflect the completed change; “the backyard was replaced by…” would be more controlled, though the location itself should also be corrected. “Meanwhile, washroom and pantry area remained” needs articles and more accurate labels, while “outdoor seating has been introduced along with indoor area” needs an article before “indoor area.” Review articles, tense consistency, and sentence punctuation, and use past forms consistently when describing changes between the plans.
