The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The illustrations shows the outline of a cafe before redesign as comapred with today. Overall, new sections like hot meals, take away food, coffee bar, salad bar were added to the plan along with a barbecue area with a oudoor seating arrangements in the back yard, keeping the kitchen, inner seating area and toilet area constant.
The old design of cafe had a kitchen in the top left along with a desk to serve all drinks and food items. It had two private staff dining rooms with toilets on the bottom right and a bin just above it. The rest of the area was utilized to accomodate the public in the table and chairs.
Many enhancements have been made in todays layout as compared with the past. To commence with, kitchen on the top left along with a hot meals serving desk. The two private staff dining are converted into take away food and coffee bar with proper segregation. Salad bar is located on the center of west just below the kitchen. Recycling bin is kept just opposite to it on the east locating above the toilets. An additional area in the back yard has a open space for barbecue in the bottom of south along with outdoor seating area having tables and chairs arranged in the east direction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response gives a clear overview of the main changes, noting that new food-service facilities and outdoor seating were added while the kitchen, central seating area and toilets remained. It also reports the conversion of the staff dining rooms into a takeaway section and coffee bar, and the replacement of the bin with recycling bins. These details address the task and are generally accurate. Some spatial descriptions are imprecise: the salad bar is described as being “on the center of west,” although it is along the western wall, and the outdoor tables are said to face east, a detail not established by the plan. To strengthen the report, describe locations more precisely and include the new southern doors connecting the café to the outdoor seating.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction and overview, a paragraph on the former layout, and a final paragraph describing the current design. This gives the reader a clear progression from the overall changes to specific comparisons. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “as compared with the past,” and “To commence with” help signal relationships between ideas. However, the final paragraph becomes a long sequence of features, and the opening phrase “To commence with, kitchen…” is not a complete sentence, interrupting the flow. Grouping the current changes by location—for example, north, west/east, then south—and using clearer links between those groups would make the progression more flexible and less list-like.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for describing a plan, with relevant terms such as “private staff dining rooms,” “segregation,” “recycling bin,” and “outdoor seating.” The writer also attempts more formal language, including “utilized” and “enhancements,” but some choices are unnatural or imprecise for this task. For example, “desk to serve all drinks and food items” would be more accurately expressed as a serving counter, while “proper segregation” does not clearly describe the layout. There are also spelling errors, including “comapred,” “oudoor,” and “accomodate.” Aim for precise plan vocabulary and check spelling; this would improve clarity and control without requiring more elaborate wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview with “while” and longer descriptions linked by “along with.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain and several sentences are incomplete or awkwardly formed. “The illustrations shows” has subject–verb disagreement, and “To commence with, kitchen on the top left…” is a fragment without a main verb. Articles and noun forms also need attention in phrases such as “a open space” and “the two private staff dining are converted.” Use complete clauses with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles and tense consistency. More accurate control of these basic patterns would make the descriptions easier to follow.
