The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given plans compares the layout of a college cafe before renovation and now.
Overall, the cafe has expanded with some new facilities such as outdoor seating areas, a salad bar, a barbecue station. All the features prior to redesign retained with some minor alterations.
Getting into the details, in the earlier cafa layout there is a kitchen area on the north-westren side with a serving area for food and drinks. Just beside that in the top middle are there are separate rooms for staff dining. Futhermore, there are toilets and a bin in the south-eastern side. also tables and chairs are spreaded on the middle for the customers.
Currently, outdoor seating area has been added with a barbecue station on the left corner. A salad bar is a new feature of the cafe just at the middle left corner. The staff dining rooms have been replaced by take away food storage and a coffee bar. The bin on the right middle corner has been upgraded with some recycleing bins. Although the kitchen area looks similar, the serving area has been replaced with hot meals. Lastly the tables and chairs on the middle and the toilets on the south-eastren corner ramined unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear overview of the main changes, noting the new outdoor seating, barbecue and salad bar, and that the toilets and central tables remain. The body also covers the replacement of the staff dining rooms with takeaway food and a coffee bar, and the change from a general serving area to hot meals. These details address the task and are mostly accurate. However, the overview says that all previous features were retained, which overgeneralises: the staff dining rooms were removed, and the serving provision changed. You could make the comparison more precise by noting the new southern doors and describing the outdoor seating as an extension beyond the original café. Overall, the key features are selected and reported clearly, with some room for greater precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a sensible progression: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the former layout and then the current one. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Currently,” and “Lastly” help signal stages in the description. The organisation is effective, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Just beside that in the top middle are there are separate rooms” interrupts the flow, while “also” begins a sentence without appropriate capitalisation. The final paragraph groups several changes together, so the reader has to move quickly between locations. To strengthen cohesion, use clearer location-based sequencing and connect related changes in a more deliberate order.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “layout,” “replaced,” “retained,” and “unchanged,” and the reader can generally identify the facilities and their positions. However, the range and control are limited by repeated basic wording and several noticeable spelling or word-choice errors, such as “cafa,” “north-westren,” “spreaded,” and “recycleing.” Some phrases are also imprecise: “upgraded with some recycleing bins” suggests an improvement rather than simply a replacement, and “take away food storage” does not match the plan’s label, “Take away food.” Use accurate labels and practise standard map vocabulary such as “located,” “converted into,” and “added along the southern side” to improve precision and naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the overview sentence beginning “Although the kitchen area looks similar,” and the final comparison of features that remained unchanged. Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors occur across sentence structures and agreement. For example, “The given plans compares” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “Just beside that … are there are” contains a faulty construction. There are also problems with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “also tables and chairs” after a full stop. The past and present descriptions are generally distinguished, but forms such as “ramined unchanged” are inaccurate. Aim to build shorter, well-controlled sentences first, then check agreement, articles, verb forms and punctuation.
