Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given plans demonstrate a college cafetaria: how it looked like before and how it looks now after redesigned.
Overall, there have been significant changes and additions to the cafe. Although, there are some areas, such as kitchen and toilets, which haven't been changed, there have been substantial additions, such as a space for barbecue and outdoor settings, and few changes in the staff dining rooms area.
Before, at the north-western side of indoor cafe there was a kitchen with a little area allocated for serving food and drinks. At the centre, there were two stuff dining rooms and below that there were some tables and chairs. At the eastern side, there were two doors just below the top corner, a bin in the middle and toilets at the bottom corner.
Today, there isn't that much change at the north-western side of indoor cafe apart from serving hot meals. A new salad bar is introduced at the middle-western side of indoor cafe which were not present before. The two staff rooms at the centre have been converted into a coffee bar and a room for take away food. Although the eastern part of the indoor cafe haven't changed, there is a significant addition at the outdoor of the cafe. At the outdoor, there is a place allocated for barbecue at the western side and there are significant amount of tables and chairs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You give a clear overview of the redesign, identifying the unchanged kitchen and toilets and the addition of outdoor facilities. The main indoor changes are also covered: the former staff dining rooms become a coffee bar and takeaway area, and a salad bar is added. These details address the task well, though some features are reported less fully than others. In particular, the outdoor seating area is described only as having “tables and chairs”; the plan shows four tables and chairs, and two new doors connecting it to the café. Also, saying the eastern part “haven't changed” overlooks the replacement of the single bin with recycling bins. Include these specific comparisons to make the account more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the earlier and current layouts. This gives the reader a clear chronological progression, and location phrases such as “At the eastern side” and “At the centre” help orient the description. The overview also usefully signals the main contrast between unchanged facilities and new additions. Some linking is less effective or repetitive, however: “Although” is used twice in the final paragraph, and the sentence beginning “Although the eastern part…” does not clearly connect the unchanged toilets with the new outdoor area. Grouping the changes by location, and using clearer transitions such as “By contrast” or “In addition,” would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “north-western side,” “converted,” “allocated,” and “significant additions.” These choices help communicate locations and changes, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “cafetaria” is misspelled, “outdoor settings” does not naturally describe a dining area, and “stuff dining rooms” is not the correct term. “Significant amount of tables” also uses an unsuitable quantity expression. Aim for precise labels from the plan, such as “staff dining rooms,” “outdoor seating,” and “four tables,” rather than broad or awkward phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “although” and “which,” and most of the layout remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement and sentence construction. For example, “the eastern part … haven't changed” needs a singular verb, while “a new salad bar … which were not present” has a mismatch between the singular noun and the verb. The opening phrase “how it looked like” is also not a well-formed construction; use “what it looked like.” In “there are significant amount,” the determiner and noun form do not agree. Check subject–verb agreement and article/number choices, especially in longer sentences, to improve accuracy.
